I like to think about the idea that the casting of this video is made of ancient majestic characters from all around the world, it’s also a tribute to nature, with small bits of our planet dancing together during three minutes.

Twice i have visited this epic location and feel i have not come away with anything that does it close to justice, until now... Shot Mt. Cook after sunset in last light, then shot the milky way about 2,5 hours later and manually blended the two. One of the coolest things I have experienced was being able to walk behind a massive waterfall. This is the same waterfall that I shared titled "Tamanawasafros". It's not really difficult to get up here, but you do need to have some good footing as the rocks can be slippery and loose. It's also a good idea to have a rain jacket or raincover as you have to cross through the mist that these falls produce. The payoff however is worth it. It's still pretty hard to get some scale, but I was actually leaning as far back against the rocky wall as I could crouching underneath my camera so I could get the right angle to enclose the falls between the roof of the alcove and the ground. It might look like there is lots of space to wander around here, but do not be fooled. The soil is very loose and its all on a slight incline. Not to mention that the rocks above a dripping making it hard to still keep dry. Anyways, just thought I would share this shot and the experience with you all. See my NEW website for more: http://bit.ly/1R4geQj A panorama of three horizontal shots taken from Uttakleiv beach in Lofoten islands. The rocky beach was full of interesting textures but I was struggling with the light as there were absolutely no low clouds to block the direct sunlight. So I had to wait until very last moment to capture the sunset or use some obstacles like I did here. In the end it turned out fine with the sharp sunburst behind the rock with zero flares and nice golden light at the edges of the frame. via 500px http://bit.ly/1CIAi9L
This project encourages viewers to watch and engage with animation physically. Discs were created with animated sequences embroidered onto their surface. They have been designed to be played on standard turntables and their shape and size is inherited from 10" vinyl records. The animation is activated when a strobe light illuminates the discs in sync with the embroidered frames of animation. A waterfall on its own doesn’t usually impress me, but using one as the foreground to Patagonia’s most dramatic mountain gives you something to work on. I confess, I thought I knew Los Glaciers National Park but here on Arroyo del Salto I found a cascade that had totally escaped my attention. I found it on the 25th May, which is a public holiday in Argentina. I was resolved to keep coming back again and again to get it right, but I managed this on only my second visit, I particularly love the small details like the tip of Fitz Roy’s summit poking out through the clouds. I was very lucky to have the perfect water flow, exquisite light on the mountain and a balanced composition. Finally found some really interesting False Hellebore while doing some scouting in Mount Rainier National Park last week. Scout location #1 turned out to be pretty good, but I fell over a log, got a baseball-sized bruise on the back of my calf which gave me a limp for 3 days, scraped my arm all to hell, and then the light sucked on top of that. Location #2 was a no go because the brush was too thick, and I couldn't manage to drag myself to intended location #3 because of said injury aquired at location #1. And even though the sunset wasn't bad (for once), I couldn't come away with anything at all I liked at Reflection Lakes...so this ended up being my keeper shot for the day. via 500px http://bit.ly/1CB6jR1

We spent two weeks in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California earlier this year. Staying camped in the same place (same campsite, even!) for so long is something I had not done until we bought our Airstream trailer last fall. GLORY DAYS: EPISODE TWO There’s a historical marker that sits out front of Warren Easton’s building at 3019 Canal Street dating the institution all the way back to 1844, making it the oldest public high school not just in New Orleans but all of Louisiana. Easton became co-ed in 1952, integrated in 1967, and came back to life in 2006, the Orleans Parish School Board having tried shuttering it following damage suffered during Hurricane Katrina. The school’s latest chapter was kicked on by a loud, vocal community—prominent alumni such as the rapper Master P and NOLA jazz superstar Trombone Shorty, and newfound local booster, Oscar-winning actress Sandra Bullock. But it’s been made true by Easton’s football coach, Tony Hull. When the New Orleans native and former NASA engineer arrived at his first head-coaching job in 2007, the school’s football reputation was in tatters, unable to even field a team the year before, its player-students scattered at other schools post-Katrina. Hull persevered—and re-built the program squad by squad. Come 2014, an incredible quarterback, Deshawn Capers-Smith, and the blue-chip All-America wide receiver, Tyron Johnson, anchored the Fighting Eagles. The scene was set for completing the school’s comeback. Easton was going to the Superdome to face one of Louisiana’s high-school football powers, Neville, in the Class 4A championship, looking to bring back to Canal Street its first state title since World War II. A montage of a dozen types of Echinopsis cactus flowers blooming. And wilting. And just generally showing off their mind-blowing colors. My favorite cactus flowerings from the 2014 blooming season. Echinopsis cactus flowers bloom overnight and the flowers last for only a day. Actually, the flowers are at their peak beauty for an hour or two at the most. That’s what turned me from a cactus enthusiast into a cactus photographer … the desire to try to preserve some aspect of their freaky beauty. Prior to becoming an Echinopsis addict a few years back, I had never owned a DSLR or image/video editing software. The cacti shown in this video come from my collection. The evening when it looks like a plant’s flowers are about to bloom, I bring it indoors to image. Most of the clips in this montage show approximately 8 hours of change as the flowers open and bloom. A little more than halfway through the montage, there’s a series of three clips showing different views of a 24-hour period in the life of a yellow-flowered ‘Daydream’ plant. Six flowers that opened the night before I started filming wilt to nothingness and another 4 flowers grow dramatically and then open. This series of 'Daydream’ clips is followed by another three showing other types of flowers wilting. These additional wilting clips are also taken over a daylong period. The question I’m asked most often about my cactus flower still images and timelapses is whether I’ve “Photoshopped” them, that is, have I used editing software to juice things up and create the flowers’ intense colors. I do, of course, use Photoshop and Lightroom and other editing software. But not in the way most suspect. Rather than using these tools to overstate reality, I actually use them to reduce the intensity of the colors my camera captures. I have reduced the color saturation in every timelapse clip in this video by a minimum of 10% and some ('Yes’, 'Cabaret’ and 'Antimatter’) by 30% or more in order to have something that wasn’t just completely blown out. Preikestolen in Norway's Southern Lysefjord moments before the sunset at the end of our trip. This was one of the wilder light shows we experienced on our journey, as the setting sun caught a series of ever more distant hills on the far bank of the Lysefjord. Normally a moment in Preikestolen is shared with hundreds of other hikers, but we had this night all to ourselves. Our Hilleberg Nammatj tent held its own against the wind that night, and we slept soundly above the cliff face. A companion shot to the initial on-the-go edit from this location. That shot came out much cooler than I would have liked, so I spent a bit longer on this one to capture the original mood. This past Spring has been eventful with regards to shooting waterfalls around the Pacific Northwest, and I'm finally getting around to processing a few of them. I haven't been posting photos very much due to spending a lot of time lately preparing for my upcoming wedding in August. Here is an image taken a few weeks ago on a rainy, foggy day in Central Oregon. After seeing Rami Jabaji's awesome take on this place (apparently him, Terence Lee and I were all in the same location that weekend without realizing it), I pondered whether or not I should even attempt to process mine, but I still decided to give it a go anyhow. If you haven't already checked out his image of Sahalie Falls, then you definitely should! I was lucky enough to have this entire area to myself on this particular evening and the conditions were more than accommodating for waterfall shooting. A light drizzle continued on throughout the evening and the misty, dreary sort of atmosphere added a nice touch to the beautiful area. And, In case you are wondering...yes, the water really is a lovely, striking blue-aqua color. As I sat there for a good couple of hours taking my surroundings in, I was thankful that I had made the last minute decision to head here, along with some other waterfalls in the Central Oregon area. It is definitely one of my new favorite waterfall destinations and it was a nice change from dealing with the crowds in the Gorge on the weekend. As always, thanks for taking a look. In the days of old, deep in the dredges of the “Do the Bartman” VHS, there was a trailer. In partnership with Chicken Tonight, Butterfinger, and CC Lemon, the early 90s execs of Fox and Toho made an animated short. An attempt to appeal to American consumers without having to spend a lot of money. Until a changing of the guard decided the kids needed more Poochie and it was lost…until today. – Bartkira is an animated parody mash-up of The Simpsons and Akira. Based on an idea by Ryan Humphrey articulated through comics, the concept was expanded with the Bartkira project, a comic collaboration of Simpsons fans, curated by James Harvey. In association with the comic, Moon Animate Make-Up producer Kaitlin Sullivan pitched the idea of an animated trailer to match and with the work of over fifty artists, produced the Bartkira animated trailer. It is in no way officially associated with Fox Animation, Toho, or any other legal properties that own the rights to The Simpsons and Akira. Please view this on black! Before I left on my two week trip to the PNW. I had envisioned some types of images I would have loved to come back with. It is not easy to think of a scene and then find something that is identical to what you had envisioned. However, on this particular day, that is exactly what happened. One of my main reasons for heading to the PNW was to photograph the many lush green forests and waterfalls that can be found in every corner. One particular type of tree was the center of attention for my ideas. I had seen many images of vine maples before, twisting and arching over canopies of ferns and such, but I couldn't recall seeing one that would perfectly frame a waterfall. Getting here was no easy task and involved sliding down muddy slopes and loose rock to. I always love finding unique scenes that are off trail, and after being somewhat disappointed on another shot I was going to take from the area, I decided to wander around a bit. I didn't wander very far when I noticed this vine maple close to the waterfall. I went to check it out more in depth and found an angle where the mossy branches framed and directed the eye straight to the falls. I feel like it was meant to be. Finding the shot that I had literally thought of in my head before ever seeing this place. Finding unique scenes like this are why I love landscape photography. There is just so much to discover just by taking a walk, or in this case a strenuous up and down battle with muddy ground. The pain and effort to get this shot though was so worth it to me, and if this had been the only photograph I came back with from my trip, I would have been happy. On July 7th 2005 I was one of the Londoners involved in the King’s Cross bombings. That morning I found myself on the carriage behind the one that was bombed, in which 26 people lost their lives. I have never publicly spoken about what happened that day. Nor do a lot of my friends know that I was even involved. A year ago I realised that it was going to be the 10 year anniversary this July and decided that this would be a good time to share my experience. I am no wordsmith so I thought it might be best to use animation to communicate my story; as a motion graphic designer this felt most appropriate to me. This is my story of Seven Seven, and how a stranger’s kindness helped me get out and start to move on. I never asked my guardian angel’s name, something I regret as I’ve never been able to really thank him. This animation is my way of giving them thanks - I really hope it can reach him. For me, this film is about more than just personal catharsis and sharing an experience. The Forlorn Gate Well, it's been about 2 months since I last posted here as I've been off traveling doing what I love! While I was gone I found myself in Patagonia for a month, followed by two weeks running workshops in the Columbia River Gorge with TJ Thorne in Oregon(which were a fantastic time), followed by some down time in Hawaii, which I owed to my wife for letting me take off for 6 weeks without her! Anyway, plenty of images coming from those travels, but I wanted to get some older stuff out of the way first. Here is an image from some dramatic coastline in southern California I shot back in March as a storm cleared. Water rushed over the rocky foreground as cormorants kept me company. I love this sea stack as it resembles a crumbled section of a massive stone fortress wall. Multiple exposures were used to capture a wider angle of view along with various shutter speeds to capture elements in the scene. I want to bring some attention to a workshop my good friends Erin Babnik and Enrico Fossati are running this summer in the Italian Dolomites. I'm positive you could not find a better workshop being run in these relatively low-photographed, amazing mountains! It's an opportunity that can't be missed. Kumano is a region in Japan where Shugendo, the Way of ascetic training and testing in holy mountains, has been practised for over a thousand years. This entire short film was shot there. It shows Yamabushi monk Kosho Tateishi, a Master and Teacher of Shugendo, during prayer rituals performed in the wild and at his temple. In his spiritual practices, Kosho is in visceral contact with the elements (earth, water, fire, wind) and in fusion with sacred Nature. The experience of Life through the physical senses awakes our consciousness and ultimately leads to enlightenment in this very body. Made possible thanks to the great help of Alena Eckelmann, Kosho Tateishi, Fukami Uzawa, Mark Patrick McGuire, Jean-Marc Abela, Jean Burgert. Thank you Alena for recommending me some of the greatest spots to explore in Kumano, especially some amazing trails of the Kumano Kodō. Thank you Kosho for welcoming me at Sangakurin and for sharing your way of living during my stay. I also want to send a very special thanks to the talented composer Oliver Dowie who created the original soundtrack by wonderfully mixing together some traditional prayers, chantings and instruments recorded on site like the Horagai, a large conch shell used by Yamabushi for spiritual meanings. Based on a documentary theater piece, DYLAN truly rides the line of documentary and narrative genres. Performed with incredible honesty and dramatic skill, Becca Blackwell unforgettably portrays a young man exploring his identity as he finds himself immersed in a new community. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT: I began the process of making this film nearly ten years ago when I wrote the script as part of a writer’s workshop taught by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, who were known for creating “The Exonerated.” The workshop was specifically focused on documentary theater writing, which was a format I knew very little about but immediately fell in love with. We were tasked to interview someone whose story seemed interesting, and through a very detailed and specific method would eventually edit these interviews into a documentary theater piece. After thinking for a bit, I decided to approach my friend Dylan Winn Garner, a friend whom I had known since childhood. As a child I had known Dylan as Emily, but had little bits of exposure to his transition which had occurred in the not too recent past. I reached out to Dylan who was willing to participate and we did a phone interview. The interview lasted for over two hours, and we discussed just about every detail of his life from early childhood on. His friendships, his relationships, and his exploration of self-identity. After the interview was over, I transcribed every last detail - every time he cleared his throat or stuttered. This was a key part of the writing process and ultimately what I believe made the final product feel so real. After editing the interview down throughout the workshop, I completed the writing piece but didn’t know what to do with it. It wasn’t placed in a location of any sort and had no life beyond the words on a page. I put it aside, but never quite forgot about it. Nearly ten years later I decided I was ready to make something out of it. I pulled out the story and began working it into a script. I gave it a setting that I felt would be appropriate - a trip to Coney Island at dawn. I had always imagined that Dylan would actually be removing layers of clothing throughout the piece to signify the removal of emotional baggage needed in order to go through the process of self-discovery. Swimming was the perfect ending because it represented the freedom that Dylan had finally achieved. I also spoke with Dylan who gave me permission to film the piece and told me that he loved the idea of going swimming at the end because he was always drawn to the water. Casting Dylan was going to be a challenge and I didn’t really know where to begin. My first instinct was to cast a man in the role but was not sure if that was really the correct choice. Through a friend of a friend I was introduced to Becca Blackwell, an incredible transgender performer out of NYC. When speaking to Becca, we discussed casting the role and they told me that if there was one thing a man could never understand, it was what it was like to want to be a man. That statement resonated with me. Becca is a superb actor who took this role and performance very seriously. Of course filming at Coney Island at dawn, travelling from the subway to the beach and all on steadycam was not an easy task. It took an amazing DP, steadycam operator, sound mixer and performer all working in sync in order to pull it off. Because the sun rose so quickly we could only get 2-3 takes max before we had to move on to the next set up. We filmed for 3 hours for two mornings in a row to get everything we needed. Everyone was incredible in making it happen and above all, Becca gave an amazing performance. I hope in watching this film the viewer can feel how real and honest this story is, and I hope that the message of self-discovery and acceptance will be embraced by all different communities. Sahalie Sweepstakes - Sahalie Falls, OR This past weekend Terence and I decided to do a quick road trip down to the Coastal California Redwoods, hitting Central Oregon on the way down and then back up through the coast on the way up. The weather wasn't cooperating so we decided to hit up some waterfalls in Central Oregon on the way back. Terence had never been to Sahalie Falls so I decided to show him some of the cool waterfalls that are often ignored due to nearby epic Proxy Falls. I also had something in mind. Last time I was here, I noticed the sweeping blue water that plunged beautifully into the McKenzie River. I wanted to access it so bad but it wasn't safe. On this morning, it looked like the water level might just be safe enough to access the spot I had previously hoped to reach. Standing here, my tripod was being crushed by the water on the left so I had to reenforce it while trying to wipe my lens from the spray between takes. As soon as I exposed a shot, I knew I had what I was looking for. I spent a while playing with slight variations to the composition, but ultimately decided on this one. A war to keep the peace. In the small village of Vrontados on the Greek island of Chios, there is unrest. For over a century, parishioners of two Greek Orthodox churches have engaged in a battle on Holy Saturday, firing more than 100,000 homemade rockets at each other’s churches once the sun goes down. This film is a reflection of a sense of devotion that feels lost in the modern world. Seeing people with so much passion for the craft and tradition of rocket-making was invigorating to witness while filming. The idea of giving your heart and soul over to something that you love is at the core of the story. We’re all after something we can give our lives to, something that can help create deeper connections with each other. It’s strange to think that this tradition can do it – but that’s a reality for many in Vrontados. They live and breathe rockets, and that’s what brings them together, especially during their Easter holiday. Its origin is unclear. One theory holds that churches on the island faked a civil war during the Turkish occupation so they could celebrate Easter without being plagued by war.
