In 2012 Penguin Books published Vahram Muratyan’s book called “Paris versus NewYork”. Being huge fans of Vahram’s work, Nord Collective always wanted to create animated version of the book. To make this tribute real we couldn’t just use original illustrations directly, so we used Vahram’s ideas as base, completely reworked design and illustrations trying to keep visual similarity to original, animated all scenes and asked our dear friend The Cosmic Setter to write and perform original music and sound design for this project. After futebol, soltar pipas, is Brasil’s most popular sport. In the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, flying the pipa is more than a leisurely escape from on-the-ground realities—it’s a venue for battle, with the entire sky as the arena. Pipa designs and airborne “cutting” strategies have been passed through generations, from rooftop to rooftop. Filmmakers Guilherme Tensol and Leandro HBL spent time in Rocinha, Rio’s largest favela, among its young pipa warriors and elder statesmen, absorbing their secrets and documenting their stories.
“TRANSFORMING” is 3D Printed Nail stopmotion animation. We printed three-dimensional artificial nails by importing the animation data into the “ProJet 660 Pro” full color 3D printer. A total of 521 nails were produced by the printer, the thinnest parts measuring only 0.56mm. We attached and replaced the nails to an actual human hand, and filmed frame by frame. This stop-motion animation was created without using any computer graphics. The LoveStories project was initiated by Iman Whitfield (graduate from Willem de Kooning), and created by her and Caroline Koning (graduate from AMFI). After researching the online community of the LoveStories brand, this video series came to its existence. The video gives insight into a loving relationship from the point of view of ‘the boyfriend’. Little details, stupid things, and charming elements are the things why he’s in love with her, even when that means eating kebab, walking into metro gates, and acting out the same film scene every single day. For years I have talked about heading north to finally seeing and shooting the aurora. With the sun cycle at solar max, I finally made the trip out to Iceland in hopes of chasing the aurora. Winters in the North Atlantic are unpredictable with frequent storms and hurricane-like winds. After weather some tough weather, we were fortunate enough to enjoy a clear night that coincided with the impact of high speed solar winds. Sure enough, the aurora show began as we ate dinner. Itching to get into the action we scarfed down our food in record fashion and let the night of fun begin. I really wanted to capture a composition that included a foreground, midground, and enough sky to show the expanse of the aurora. I spotted this small area of the stream that had rather still water and made for a great reflection. Shortly after setting up a burst of aurora streaked across my frame creating a lightning bolt shaped green pattern. I was breathless seeing how bright the aurora became. Overhead the aurora danced and twinkled like fireworks. Surely enough it was a night to remember and if it weren't for the long day I would have stayed up all night. via 500px http://500px.com/photo/104882203

This photo comes from one of my favourite locations in the Garibaldi Park in British Columbia, Canada. As the summer ends, I usually decide to visit the Black Tusk area (Black Tusk showcased on the photo) and explore its incredible potential for photo/adventure tours. The Black Tusk itself is a 2319 metres high, spectacular stratovolcano pinnacle rock. The area is one of the most geologically diverse places and offers unmatched range of photo opportunities. Within 2 hours of hike you can see blooming flowers, semi dessert Moon-like landscape with bare rocks as well as glacier. This photo was taken at sunset, about 200 m from my camp for the night. I was hiking around looking for composition. The sky was getting slowly darker and I didn't have much of a hope for good light. When I decided to give this composition a try I noticed some pink hues slowly emerging on the sky. After few shots taken for flowers in the foreground the light on the sky started to dance. The whole show lasted only for a few minutes. So here it is: the "Sky Dance." Although I have already shot from this location more than a couple times before, I have been conducting workshops here in Patagonia this season and wanted to share with my clients some of the best locations I have found. On this particular morning, our efforts in waiting out an unseasonably cold 5-day storm we were rewarded with a rare snowfall in early-fall, before the colors had even turned yet! Mainly, we were there for the sunrise, but it turned out it was the moonset light in my first few shots as the storm was still clearing that became my favorites. I felt the conditions here were unique enough to add this composition to my portfolio one more time, and I hope you enjoy it. The exposure was 20 seconds at ISO 4000 and f/5.6. in the end, everyone can understand themselves only. You are the only one to which you never have to explain what you mean. Everything else is misunderstanding. Laguna Torre - Patagonia With so much commanding our attention these days, it’s easy to feel like were drowning in a tidal wave of messages that arrive daily through our phones, computers and personal devices. At some point, it seems the only way to catch a break is to simply walk out into the wilderness, and away from the constant technological distractions. I have just completed my second OOAK Photography Adventure for 2015, we went on a backcountry trip in Patagonia both in Chile and Argentina and enjoyed many nights camping in the wilderness. This trip was particularly wonderful because it was my first to this part of the world and a break from the endless notifications that inundate my daily life. I was reminded of the importance of temporarily disconnecting from the “real” world. Of course, it doesn’t take a photography trip to do this. A walk in the park, run by the river or snowshoe in the mountains will provide ample opportunity to go social media free for a few hours. In order to truly disconnect I believe we need to either spend some time alone or surround ourselves with people who can also turn the power off. Unfortunately we have become so dependent on this form of communication we found it hard to disconnect.. Just a few hours or days spent away from our devices gives us the perspective and discernment we need when we choose to connect again. By fully engaging in our time spent in nature - breathing in the fresh air, watching the sun set and rise or the way the snow blows off the mountains - we’ll stay in the present moment and away from the perpetual ”To Do List.” In fact, when we let go of all the things that command our attention, we are better able to prioritize and discern what is important. The time we take to refresh our spirits will make us much more creative when it’s time to enter the game again. What I really missed the most was my beautiful wife and children, I feel recharged by my time in the wilderness and believe I can better handle what happens in the “real" world. via 500px http://500px.com/photo/104535909

One of the greatest prospects of visiting any far Northern country is the opportunity to witness the Northern Lights. I was almost guaranteed to see and shoot it on my trip, as I had a full 20 nights there. Surely enough, the forecast promised level 5 Aurora activity (very strong) for my first night. After running around Reykjavik to get microspikes and thermal boots, I headed to a nearby lake that a friend told me of. As night fell, I could already see streaks of green above the street lights of the capital. I went to the lake feeling inspired, but upon getting there I realised that I don't know the place, the full moon is out, I've been travelling for 48 hours and it's -12 degrees, by far the coldest I've ever experienced. I enjoyed simply witnessing it and went to bed. Then, as Murphy would have it, the Northern Lights remained dormant for a full 17 days. The last few days of my trip were dreary and unlucky as the clouds always did just the wrong thing. Finally, on my 2nd-last night, the Aurora forecast showed level 4 activity and the weather forecast promised clear skies. The display started just as darkness fell, slowly and with plenty of cloud cover. I was hoping for something much better and between the clouds, a weak display and a temperature of -9 degrees, I was almost ready to give up. Like a sign from the gods, the sky suddenly exploded with light, shapes and colour. The dark night turned into a green day as the Aurora cast enough light to make everything clearly visible on a moonless night. My heart pounded with pure joy as the streaks of green, purple and red changed shape and colour. It was hands down, by far, without a shadow of a doubt the most unbelievable thing I've ever seen. Double-Blind No.1 is a VFX design project by Zenon Kohler, Jasper St Aubyn West, Ian Anderson, Ricky Marks and Raoul Teague. Their self-imposed brief was to produce a collection of unique shots by experimenting with different styles and creative techniques. With access to all of the raw footage, each artist selected shots they felt would best inspire their individual creativity. There was no expected outcome or planned narrative, instead the result shows what happens when five artists are let loose with a goat, a gasmask, and their imaginations.

This short film takes us from the mundane to the sublime, from the chaotic to the peaceful, and for a moment we consider our beliefs about spirituality. Lago Pehoe is a cool location- sometimes you have waves that let you shoot seascapes and sometimes (rare) the lake lays there like a mirror. I'm a working class person, I can't afford taking days off work to the famous scenery tourist spots (can't afford it financially either). The reason I like the photography is that, you can just capture the beauty near you, if you pay attention. This photo is taken at Gladstone, Missouri, a tiny hill outside a church, a secrete place I discovered for excellent lone tree shots. The girl in the distance was apparently appreciating the wonderful sunset. So there is no fancy lakes, symmetrical long exposure reflections, or fog mountains. The Valley of Thor by ArturStanisz
Note: This is a single exposure shot with Nikon D810. My next photo from the Baffin Island Photo Adventure 2014 aims to show a desolated beauty of the valley that leads to the legendary peak, Mt. Thor. During my stay in the Summit Lake area, I spent many hours hiking and scrambling, looking for the best views. I found this composition while wandering on the NW slopes of the valley. The size of the valley itself is immense. To give you a sense of perspective, the bottom of the valley sits at about 300 meters above the sea level and the surrounding peaks reach around 2000 meters. For example: two peaks visible on the right hand side of the photo are Mt. Northumbria (1911 meters) and Mt. Odin (2143m). It took me about 3 hours to hike from this point where I was shooting to the base of Mt. Thor. My goal while shooting this composition was to showcase the landscape in its changing season, from fall to winter. I found few patches of Arctic cotton; just below the snow level and it added a season changing feel to this composition. The photo was taken during the sunset. The soft, peach-hued light gives an impression of warm, golden-like fall weather conditions. But don’t be mistaken. The temperature was already below the freezing point. Taken at Bandon Beach during the lunar eclipse early Saturday morning. Just to be clear, the orange light at the horizon between the seastacks is not a sunset or sunrise. It's ambient light from a boat(s). I was just as surprised to see the glow when viewed on my LCD screen. In addition, I zoomed in on the moon in order to get more details and a better exposure otherwise the moon would have been just a bright white circle. In Photoshop, I placed the properly exposed moon exactly where it was in the scene, size and all, which was taken at approximately 5:00 - 5:15 am. Really REALLY needs to be viewed on black. Please? So, well... Getting this image meant I got to cross a bucket list item off while I was in Norway. Yep, that's right... I got to annoy people with my snoring ON ANOTHER CONTINENT. Only a few more to go! Actually, getting to see epic Aurora displays was on the bucket list, the snoring was just a side effect. We knew clear skies were in the works, we had a decent Aurora forecast, and we had a place we wanted to shoot. Problem was, we were all exhausted from the long days and short nights... so while we waited to see what would become of the night sky, we slept in our tour vans. There's nothing quite as refreshing as sleeping sitting straight up in a van that smells of dudes and wet boots... especially after having spent some 18+ hours the previous days trying to sleep on a plane, or sleep on a bench at the airport, or trying to sleep when your body still thinks its afternoon when clearly the clock now displays otherwise. But hey, I made it work and was merrily sawing logs in the drivers seat of the van while my half of our group of clients suffered around me. Then I was rudely awakened to an ear piercing knock on the window, right at face level. I assumed it was the Norwegian cops coming to tell us we were not allowed to sleep in the parking lot (turns out they are actually quite laid back about camping rules over there!) but instead saw Arild rubbing sleep out of his eyes and spouting off about "it's happening" or something. All six of us from my van bolted awake in unison like the ugliest choreographed dance routine you've ever seen. After letting our eyes adjust... yep, there it was! A faint green and purple band of glowing light stretched across the horizon. Many people on this trip, myself included, had yet to be blessed with good Aurora shooting in their lives. So despite our tapped energy reserves, we hurriedly rushed to get our gear and go play. The shooting lasted for hours and we all were able to use the adrenaline to our advantage and make the most of the first (and best) Northern Lights display of our trip. This shot wasn't even from the peak of the Aurora that night. I actually didn't fire off many shots during the best display, as I was too busy standing there gawking at it in amazement like some newborn having car keys dangled in their face. It was absolutely astonishing and easily one of the most addicting things I have ever laid eyes on (Norwegian bacon-wrapped hot dogs not withstanding). I know it's the lamest thing in the world to say this, but it was actually a spiritual type of moment for me. I think many of the guys on this trip felt the same way, as the loud "oohs" "ahhs" and "holy shits" pierced through the dark night as the waves of light twisted and danced in the sky. Luckily, we had scouted out this location previously in the daylight and we all managed to find compositions we liked that we took mental note of to ensure we knew what we were doing later that night in the dark. I had seen this peak and some cool looking striations in the different colored sands that I thought looked promising, but it wasn't until I tried to pull off this shot in the dark that I realized I had completely underestimated what it would take to make it work. This 12 focus points, all shot at 30sec f.28 and iso3200 (it proved to be a pain in the ass to focus stack at super wide apertures) for the foreground and midground pointing downward with my lens, then another few shots panned upward for the mountain and sky... these were exposure blended. Then all of these had to be stitched and blended by hand to get everything put together. This is probably the longest I've spent processing a shot in the past couple years. More than this shot, what stands out to me are the good memories and new friendships that I was able to bring home with me. Arild and I are super stoked to announce two more of these tours, so if you are interested in having a freaking blast in the arctic you'll want to check it out. Lake Bumbunga South Australia (as they say, view on black for best effect!) Sometimes I ask myself why I continue to take photographs. This tends to happen every so often when in moments of self doubt that occur due to many other reasons. Then I reflect on all the things about the process that I enjoy. -I enjoy being on a dark highway at 3am in the morning -I enjoy listening to music from the 90's dance scene that make me recall how much energy I had in my 20s -I look forward to looking for that turnout I've taken so many times yet always seem to miss in the dark! -I like being out in the pitch dark laying dirtily on my back looking at the stars above. -I often enjoy taking a stripped back approach to photography at times without worrying about focus stacking , exposure blending, and all the technical stuff that can sometimes make me forget just where I am. - I especially appreciate the coke bottle sitting next to me on my drive home and enjoy just as much the smiles of Jaime and Charlotte as I arrive home. - I am excited as ever to import the images and play around with them to get them on their way to how I hope they should turn out. Marianne and I will be going on a holiday for ourselves for a week coming up and we will miss our girls! I might have to remind myself to strip back sometimes and just enjoy rather than be driven to photograph. Workshops Video Tutorials I know it is barely April, but honestly every year at about this time I grow extremely eager with anticipation for my upcoming summer “Chasing Monsoon Light in the Great Southwest” tours. Today as I was packing for my Patagonia workshop, I actually was daydreaming of this summer in the SW! While riding my bicycle today I was so engrossed in SW though I actually road off the road! :) Honestly, nothing quite thrills me like leading a great group of photographers in a chase for truly epic light. Like the years past, last year mother nature did not disappoint for even one day or one shoot. My clients and I had a time of our lives roaming the remote deserts getting grand light and amazing conditions. After a tour is over, sometimes I will invite my clients (now usually friends) to continue the chase! On this occasion, after intensely studying all the weather reports and radar, everything pointed to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Near sunset the lightning moved on through at a far distance but electricity was certainly in the air! Every time I touched my tripod (even repetitively) it would strongly shock me. In these situations I usually take critical cover and let the camera take the risk and go to work in continuous mode (catching about 3/4ths of the strikes). This year I will try out my new lightning trigger. If you have not heard the deafening crack of roaring thunder reverberating through the depths of the Grand Canyon, you may want to. It is something so awesome you likely will not forget it the rest of your life! If you are interested in chasing wild Southwest light with me this year, I only have a few more spots open on 2 tours. This year is my most ambitious workshop year to date and I am leading over 15 workshops from the Pacific Northwest, to Patagonia, to the Great SW and beyond. My first time in Patagonia and after all I have read and seen it's more beautiful than all the descriptions but much easier than all the big name photographers make it out to be, I have smashed the W track in 2 days with over 100km's of hiking and blasted many a myth about these almost impossible locations with ease. Floating ice shots will cost you $100 and a afternoon kayak ride (no need for a 25 day hike with a boat on your head) beer and cracking dinners at every stop and most hikes can be done with minimal effort, in fact New Zealand is much harder. Pacer looked at the world in a way no film had before it. The geometry of the city and its construction, the artistry of Montreal’s landscape seen the hyper-prism of a camera racing through time on different dimension. Compressed imagery and physical motion combine in a never-been-seen-before kind of way. Pacer can lay claim to being the first hyperlapse film, or at the very least, to being the precursor to it’s development. It was shot on a Bolex 16mm camera in Montreal, Quebec in 1995. Shooting single frames, all the ‘effects’ are done in camera. The film’s original negative was destroyed in it’s one and only printing in 1995. That print was screened once and telecined for posterity, and the print was never projected again. The film would’ve fallen into obscurity, except for the low rez video version that was included in a VHS video magazine called Channel Zero in 1996. Other visual artists like TopherZ of the Dandelion Collective who saw that Channel Zero and began to pick up the technique, and with Guy Roland’s subsequent film, Spacer, in 2004 (later known as Kino Citius), the technique of hyperlapse took shape. The only print of the film was carefully transferred to 2K digital in 2014 and painstakingly remastered in early 2015, resulting in the version you see here.
