It was a passion project as well as my graduation thesis film at Communication University of China. This 11-month journey was very challenging, but it was a perfect learning opportunity as well. The idea of intellectual robots exploring space developed from there. Voorheen maakte zij de documentaire Moederskind, die uitgezonden werd door de NTR. Wiep Teeuwisse is in 2015 afgestudeerd van de HKU met haar animatie Depart at 22, die de prijs voor de beste studentenfilm won op Annecy dit jaar. Haar eerdere animatie Facing the news draaide op verschillende filmfestivals en won de Shortcutz Award voor beste animatie.

“Papa Machete” is a glimpse into the life of Alfred Avril, an aging subsistence farmer who lives in the hills of Jacmel, Haiti. He also happens to be a master of the mysterious martial art of Haitian machete fencing, also known as Tire Machèt. This is what happens with live action role playing (LARPing), where people take on character roles and physically act them out in fictional settings. As the Creative Director of Odyssé and one of the world’s experts on LARPing, Bjarke Pedersen has spent many years exploring the power of this collaborative form of storytelling. He’s observed that by getting a chance to engage with different characters, LARPers are also able to learn more about themselves. LARPing is also particularly powerful for the ways in which it relies on building trust among people. Many individuals are able to tell their own stories within a given framework, but it is the larger output of so many different stories being told at the same time that makes LARPing so unique and powerful.
