As the days shorten and the darkness progressively eats away the light, an amazing transformation happens in the northern hemisphere skies. A lot of astronomers and stargazers prefer summertime to look up at the stars, probably because conditions are better and the brightest part of our own galaxy, the milky way is more visible, even with the naked eye. Although fainter, the ‘winter’ part of the milky way and the rest of the winter sky harbor countless unsuspected gems, if one knows how to find and capture them!

In the late Fall, you can still get a glimpse at the bright core of our galaxy sink down under the horizon just after sunset, along with its dark hydrogen gas lanes, Lagoon and trifid nebulae, and Saturn. Later, you can catch Scutum (shield constellation) and its dark nebulosity set in the south west/west. In the movie, this part is visible in many scenes but my favorite one is by far as it sets on La Palma shores behind a thunderstorm accompanied by red sprites, airglow and zodiacal lights. Then, take a peek at one of my favorite areas of the winter sky: the Swan constellation. I presented it to you (also on the cover), so that you can see it from different perspectives, but the best is probably at a narrower angle to show the beautiful magenta colors of the H-alpha emission nebulae (North-American, Pelican, Sadr region or IC 1396). I also included a scene where the ‘Summer Triangle’ of Cygnus (formed by Deneb, Sadr, Delta Cygni, and Gienah) is photobombed by an overhead aurora borealis. Continuing along the winter milky way, I included a shot of the Heart and Soul nebula. Rising on the other side of the hemisphere, we are now looking at the outer edge of our galaxy, where very little light comes from fewer stars, nebulae and dark clouds (in comparison to the core!). I wanted to show you a very novel scene combining the hot Pleiades stars reflecting their blue light onto passing gasses and the California nebula glowing blood red! The next area I want to emphasize is winter’s most emblematic: Orion. I wanted to maximize the different colors and brightness this constellation has to offer while shooting it in a series of single shots: the orange of Betelgeuse and the blue of Rigel, the gigantic red-glowing Barnard’s loop, the inevitable shell-like Orion nebula along with the running man nebula, the horse-head nebula, the flame nebula, Lambda Orionis nebula… Further away from the winter milky way doesn’t mean dull at all, au contraire! Look at the magnificent Andromeda galaxy (M31), the size of 6 full moons- rise above the tree line! What about the iconic Big Dipper being photobombed by some pillars of Icelandic and Canadian aurora borealis? What about these iridescent marbles at the very start of the video? Those are twinkling Sirius, Capella (bottom left) and Vega (upper right) emphasized by the real-time out-of-focus setting to reveal the hypnotic shift in light and colors of these twinkling stars created by our own atmosphere! You will probably miss a lot of night sky events if you only watch the video once! Don’t blink, you might miss a lot of meteors (Perseids, Orionids, Draconids, Leonids…), iridium flares, low-orbit satellites, red sprites. What about those satellites that seem to ‘follow’ each other in some deep-sky scenes? Those are geosynchronous satellites normally hovering over a fixed point of the Earth, but the motion of the star tracker allows them to move whereas the sky is now immobile. I am sure professionals and amateurs will spot many more features, all you have to do is sit back and gaze!

The goal of this series of astro-lapses ‘Galaxies’ and especially this second opus was a way for me to push the limits of single astrophotography. However beautiful and numerous they are, wide-angle shots of the milky way moving against a foreground became less interesting to me as I got to shoot more and more astro-timelapses. I became more interested in exploring the possibilities that modern lenses, sensors and techniques could give, so I started using medium-format and astromodfication to take advantage of a wider light spectrum and show the red colors of H-alpha emission nebulae that are so ubiquitous in the winter part of the sky. I also wanted to improve the quality of the shots, so I used a square light pollution filter for shots at more than 50mm (Lonely Speck’s Pure Night LP filter), and a star tracker for some of the scenes to increase sharpness and details (Vixen Polarie). It was very important for me to prove that deep-sky time-lapses can be very interesting and successful, whether they hold a foreground or not, because so many things can be happening the sky (airglow, meteors, satellites, haze giving a temporary glow to the stars…). All shots have been recorded over the past year and in different countries (France, Switzerland, Spain, Iceland, Denmark and Canada). I will gladly give more details upon request. Thanks a lot for watching!

A skateboard project by Will Dias written and directed by Filipe Zapelini http://bit.ly/2ztOJOi The crowd is his element, as the air is that of birds and water of fishes. His passion and his profession are to become one flesh with the crowd. […] To be away from home and yet to feel oneself everywhere at home; to see the world, to be at the centre of the world, and yet to remain hidden from the world—impartial natures which the tongue can but clumsily define. The spectator is a prince who everywhere rejoices in his incognito.“ (Charles Baudelaire). This condition allowed Will to walk the streets with no apparent purpose, but secretly aware of the history of the places where he passed and the possibility of aesthetic adventures that every detail of the city - his architecture - represents. In the era of Liquid Modernity, Will moves over his skating across the metropolis like a fish in a river, ignoring divisions and barriers, taking forms, occupying spaces, diluting certainties, beliefs and practices. "If a tree falls in the forest and no one is near to hear, does it make any noise?” This is a fundamental question for a philosophical and mental experiment that raises doubts about observation and knowledge of reality. If Will was not realized this work would exist? It is in this context that Filipe Zapelini becomes essential - without his gaze “the essence of this reality would not have been perceived by reason.” by Francis Bacon. Florence is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world with its overflow of palaces, churches and museums filled with masterful paintings and sculptures. Known worldwide as the birthplace of the Renaissance, Florence embodies the spirit of ancient Italy and has managed to preserve it for nearly 700 years. With over 350,000 who call the city home, and nearly 1.5 million who reside in its surrounding metropolitan area, Florence skillfully fuses the past with the present, creating a unique time capsule of ancient aesthetics housed within a hustling, bustling world of modern day Italy. Containing a wealth of preserved artistic and architectural masterpieces, the city is home to almost one-third of the world’s artistic treasures, according to UNESCO, an organization which designates world heritage sites to preserve the world’s most important cultural locations and artifacts. With a near countless number of art galleries and over 45 museums – including the Uffizi gallery, the world’s best collection of Italian Renaissance art, and the Galleria dell'Accademia, home to the legendary statue of David – it is no wonder why the city captures the hearts and imaginations of all who visit. From the ancient churches and stunning buildings that line the city streets to the priceless artistic masterpieces created by Michelangelo, Botticelli, and Giotto housed within Florence’s galleries, the city is bursting with art and culture. Florence’s influence can be felt in more than just the world of art. The capital of the region of Tuscany, Florence is the birthplace of the Italian language. It was famed Italian author Dante Alighieri and other writers such as Boccaccio and Petrarca who were the first to begin writing in a language other than Latin. Florence was also the first city in all of Europe to have paved streets. With its rich history and incomparable influence on modern Italian life, Florence certainly changed the way that most view Italy.

In a timely story about love triumphing over fear, we created a short festive animation that would rival any Christmas advert in the cuteness stakes! Now in its 6th year, our company-wide shorts programme encourages experimentation in the studio and a culture of creative collaboration. Everyone in the studio has the opportunity to pitch their idea, and everyone votes for their favourite, making it unique and democratic. This year Simone Giampaolo & Francesco Mazza won the vote and steered the studio together to make this short. SYNOPSIS Life is liberty in a CAGE. CAGE represents a situation that is filled with a lot of constraints, or a habit or an addiction that is hard to get rid of. This project is to present a Chinese cultural and traditional visual style to audiences. On the other hand, CAGE tries to inspire them to recall their memory and consider what is the meaning of life to them individually. ———————————————————– DIRECTOR STATEMENT My story depicts a period of a concubine’s bound life. She has gained a lot since being consumed by her man in both dream and reality. In reminiscence, as she remembers her life from the end back to the beginning, she has vivid dreams that evoke her longing desire. She finds it hard to disengage from her current situation, because the path in her dream is breaking and falling apart. She could not go back, even in the dream. Finally, she is disconnected from her dream and brought back into reality. In a blink of an eye, she looks at the emperor and carefully starts to serve the emperor as shown in the opening scene. According to my grandmother’s story of her early life experience, her families lived with struggle at the time of the Chinese Great Cultural Revolution. My grandfather’s families were Intellectuals and landowners, and they were criticized and denounced. However, they supported the leader and government. Most of the Intellectuals and landowners‘ property was confiscated or destroyed in the end. Intellectuals and landowners were banished or locked up by others. My grandfather joined the army for battle although he was an Intellectual. My grandmother lost everything except her five children including my father who was nearly five years old. Since then, they went into a different life with no money, no food, no education and no smile every day. Finally, my grandmother took her children, left Shandong and went to Nanjing. At my grandmother’s time, women could not go to school because people thought that women did not need to study because of old traditions. Cooking, sewing, having kids and taking care of them were their career for their whole life. Therefore, for women it was hard to find a job outside of the family, especially for my grandmother who had five kids. Life was like a stubborn cage where women were inside, and people’s minds were also bound in a cage, and women were outside of that cage. However, life needed to go on for some reasons such as for those young lives. My grandmother dropped off her dignity, and went out to pick waste such as scrap iron, goose feathers and grain, because she needed money to eat. Fortunately, life is like that. As long as we can insist on holding hope, we can carry on. My families did. They “put down” something while “picking up” something else. I created an animation, Ya-er (2009), as a life-recording gift to my grandparents and their families. My intention for this project is to present a Chinese cultural and traditional style to my audience. On the other hand, I want to inspire them to recall their memory and consider what is the meaning of life to them individually. When they follow the girl’s experience in my film, I hope people will be able to ask themselves, “If I also live my life within a golden cage, how would that affect me? Have I felt satisfied in my life?“ ——————————————- Dupp (Pengpeng Du)

The Bronx Freedom Fund pays the bail for people accused of misdemeanors who cannot afford their freedom. Who are these people? They are often the most vulnerable in our community and those with the least public voice. They are people like Ramel. Having Ramel share his story with us was transformative – to be innocent and have your liberty denied is a national shame. His story galvanized us to make this film because his voice not only deserves to be heard, but needs to be heard. His courage, resolve and compassion is an inspiration and it’s time to shine a light on this grave injustice being visited upon far too many of our fellow citizens. The Bronx Freedom Fund, and now the national Bail Project, is doing their part – Ramel’s story is a stirring reminder that it’s up to all of us to step up and do ours. The Bail Project is an unprecedented national effort to combat mass incarceration by keeping tens of thousands of low-income Americans out of pretrial detention. The organization grows out of The Bronx Freedom Fund and will expand to dozens of high-need jurisdictions with the goal of reducing the unacceptable human suffering caused by unaffordable cash bail and supporting community efforts to end the racial disparities endemic to this system. “Transient” [tran-shuh nt, -zhuh nt, -zee-uh nt] Adjective. not lasting, enduring, or permanent; lasting only a short time; existing briefly. Philosophy. person or thing that is transient, especially a temporary guest, boarder, laborer, or the like. Electricity. a sudden pulse of voltage or current. All footage available to license at 4K resolution. Contact: dustin@dfvc.com “Transient” is a compilation of the best shots from my storm chasing adventures of summer 2017. Most of the lightning footage was captured in uncompressed raw at 1000 frames per second with our Phantom Flex4K. This summer I chased for over 30 days and traveled 20K miles. My respect and admiration for storm chasers became even stronger this year. This is one of the most difficult projects I have ever attempted in my career. On several occasions I found myself uncomfortable either mentally or physically. Chasing storms with a Phantom Flex4K is stressful even when things are going well. There were at least 10 days where I returned home with my tail between my legs and nothing to show after a ten hour chase and 500 miles. There were also a couple of days that I drove home with an ear to ear smile that lasted for hours. Most of the lightning was captured in my home state of Arizona. I also spent a week in the Great Plains chasing with Chad Cowan. It was during this time that I captured a time-lapse of the massive super-cell shown twice in Transient. For some reason that damn super-cell refused to spit out a proper bolt. Lightning is like a snowflake. Every bolt is different. I learned that lightning varies greatly in speed. There are some incredible looking bolts that I captured that didn’t make the cut because even at 1000fps they only lasted for one frame during playback. I also captured some lightning that appear computer generated it lasted so long on the screen. Technical info: The Phantom Flex4K is a camera that must be post triggered while shooting high speed. This works out well for capturing lightning because the camera is always recording and rewriting to internal ram. As soon as a bolt appears in my view finder I trigger the camera to save what has been stored in the ram. Shooting at high frame rates requires a lot of light. Therefore, I mostly used my Zeiss Otus 28, 55, and 85mm lenses wide open at f1.4. In all, I captured 10TB of data during this production. Special thanks to Chad Cowan for many of the time-lapse shots in the video and to Mike Olbinski for the storm chasing advice and guidance. Music licensed from Audiomachine

Max Cooper: I had a lot of high speed train journeys recently and I love watching the wires seemingly dance around outside the window. I wondered if we could be getting fooled by a similar process during our usual experience of time, and thought it would be an interesting project for a music video set to the music created during the same journeys. The wires outside the window are static but they appear to move because of our motion past them. Perhaps our usual experience of movement could be explained by a similar process, where time is a physical dimension into which everything grows, with the present as the surface of this inflating structure. It ties in to a lot of physics ideas which are very common, and I thought it could make for an interesting music video, if I could find someone who might be able to pull it off! Luckily for me, one of my favourite visual artists, Kevin McGloughlin had already been experimenting with linked techniques and ideas, and he’s gone to town on it with a multitude of techniques and editing precision to create something pretty special. And yes, there’s certainly a nod to the original time-stretch slitscan effects of Kubrick’s 2001. I wanted to show the transition from our normal experience of time to a stretched out past as a physical structure when viewed from an alternative perspective outside of the dimensions we’re usually constrained to. One other interesting thing about this model of time is that it helps with some mind-pickling metaphysical conundrums around the sense in which the past exists. In this model it literally exists out there behind us as a physical 4D structure. If we could travel outside of our growing surface somehow and went back to the past it wouldn’t be much fun though, we’d just find solid lifeless stretched out versions of ourselves. For the music I wanted to bring these ideas of frozen moments of the past into play, and no better excuse to get stuck in with the Prophet 6 on some lush classic analogue synth sounds for the main chord sequence, and plenty of nob noodling for a dance of modulating sounds around the main sequence. I wanted to keep it fairly sparse to let the chord patch be central, and just focus on trying to make every element, including the percussion, warp a little, so you can either listen to the track from a distance and hear the harmonic ideas, or delve in to find all sorts more hiding in there. Kevin did an amazing (and painstaking) job of warping the video to sync with the audio detailing. If you’d like to receive exclusive music, mixes, video and news you can sign up to the site at http://bit.ly/2iQveKo Kevin McGloughlin: Max Cooper and I discussed ideas about space-time before embarking on the Resynthesis project. We were on the same page for the most part, though, working with Max is always insightful and he enlightened me with some really fascinating ideas about space - time. I was delighted to once again collaborate, especially with reference to ‘time’, which is such a relatable and unavoidable part of everyone and everything. The track is really beautiful, I saw the visuals in the music quite clearly from the offset. I could hear the 'time stretching’ in the melodies and synths and I was greatly inspired by it. My aspiration in this piece was to create a journey for the viewer, a passage through space and time, in an effort to represent time as a dimensional structure. I aimed to convey existence as a solid component of time, an effort to glimpse the idea that our past still exists out there in a stretched, distorted dwelling.. I wanted to capture a human / mortal essence of time, displaying brief impressions of human interactions and activity, traveling in time. All the fundamental assets were captured employing photography and realtime footage. I stretched time in both 3d and 2d space using a wide variety of time displacement techniques, ranging from 'in camera’ work to quite laborious post production work. Fun Fact..Some of the clips contain exactly one googol videos playing simultaneously. (using a method I devised some time ago, ie.the second last very short clip) Most of footage/photography was shot in Dublin Ireland, with additional shots from Co. Sligo. Working with Max always makes for an interesting time. http://bit.ly/2BdNrrN http://bit.ly/2urwwi9 http://bit.ly/2BgyV2q http://bit.ly/2iSeqTe

Sandwiched between the borders of West Yellowstone and Big Sky, the 9 Quarter Circle Ranch is a rustic collection of log cabins and stables cradled in a valley of the Rocky Mountains. It’s here one finds Kameron Kelsey, the third-generation steward of the 9QC. The Kelsey family pride themselves on their adherence to tradition, as the ranch exists in something of a time warp, its practices mostly unchanged over the past 70 years. Due to the high elevation of the ranch, weather during the winter months is exceptionally perilous. Every fall, the ranch’s horses are taken down to a lower elevation pasture to live out the cold months in more favorable conditions. Each June, come rain or shine, the Kelseys, along with a group of a dozen or so wranglers, family, and friends, come together to push the herd 20 plus miles back up to the ranch, in a near sacred ritual they dub “The Round Up”. Of all the 9QC practices, this one is perhaps the most antiquated, and is the one the Kelsey family are most proud to preserve. It’s an exhaustive three-day marathon, one that takes them across a variety of terrain. Would it be simpler to gather the animals and truck them up to the ranch? Absolutely, but this isn’t about being easy. It’s about holding onto tradition. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Directed by: Kristopher Rey-Talley Produced by: Rad Roubeni, Kristopher Rey-Talley & Phil Pinto Executive Produced by: Jinhee Chu, Rad Roubeni Photography by: Ryan Dickie, Sam Wootton, Josh Goleman, Kristopher Rey-Talley Edited by: Alex Camilleri, Kristopher Rey-Talley, Ed Yonaitis Color by: Mike Howell Sound Design by: Greg Tobler, Colin Alexander Aerial Photography by: Brendan Murphy

This is an intense audio-visual animation that has the potential to trigger seizures for those with photosensitive epilepsy. Viewer discretion is advised. After the compression of the spiritual world by the force of regulation, there will follow a series of emotions such as introspection, violence, self-destruction, and untangling. This work utilizes the own approach of the digital medium itself to deconstruct, to form the subliminal synesthesia visually and to create a fictional experience for the mind. 精神世界在面对强制规则化的重压后,爆发的一系列有关反思、暴力、自毁,排解的情绪。作品利用数字媒介自身的解构方式,形成潜意识的视觉通感,创造虚构的情感体验。 Director: Liu Sha Original Music: Ma Yao Sound Design: Zhai Xiaofei 2016 “It Is My Fault” is this week’s Staff Pick Premiere! In recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance/Resilience on November 20th, 2017 and the start of Trans Awareness Week, we are proud to release our short documentary entitled “Handsome and Majestic”. A multiple award-winning 12 minute film that has played at over 25 festivals worldwide from Manitoba to New Zealand, this short documentary profiles Milan, a 15-year-old transgender boy growing up in the northern Canadian city of Prince George, B.C. As a recently transitioned transgender boy, Milan deals with discrimination from his peers and teachers at school, as he seeks to find other kids like himself. His parents are open and supportive throughout his transition, and his sister Lulu never questioned that Milan was her brother. However, at his elementary school, he must face the lack of education, intolerance and even assault. When Milan meets another transgender boy in his neighbourhood, he finally finds someone his age who understands and shares his experience. With the support of his friends and family, Milan has become a role model and an advocate for trans individuals in his small community and beyond. As part of the release of the film, the filmmakers are also running a “GoFundMe” campaign in order to raise funds to get Milan fitted for a suit in New York City by renowned tailors Bindle & Keep, who specialize in suits for non-binary and trans people. After “Handsome and Majestic” screened alongside “Suited”, a feature documentary about them at Hot Docs Festival 2016, the tailors have generously offered to make Milan a suit of his own. After being dropped in the woods by a mysterious blue light, a haunted woman (Lindsay Burdge) reconnects with her estranged sister (Jade Lane) to explain where she’s been and what she’s been through. Through this incomprehensible trauma, the sisters draw ever closer, only to drift apart yet again. “A familial sci-fi drama that surrounds its gruesome finale with moments of carefully constructed empathy, [Sisters] is a study in abstract horror and potential mental illness. Osborn’s use of parallel editing, particularly in a sequence that alternates between a downstairs kitchen and an upstairs bathroom, earns its high-strung pathos.” –Erik Luers, Filmmaker Magazine OFFICIAL SELECTION: Denver Film Festival Dallas International Film Festival Maryland Film Festival * Starring Lindsay Burdge, Jade Lane, and Ava Briglia Written and directed by Chris Osborn Produced by Chris Osborn Breanne Thomas Adam F. Traditional time-lapses are constrained by the idea that there is a single universal clock. In the spirit of Einstein’s relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene. Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse. After releasing “Boston Layer-Lapse” a few years ago, I was able to quit my engineering job to focus on time-lapse and film making. New York City was the obvious subject for my next film, the immense skyline was ideal. However I was facing an unknown creative challenge: when I created Boston Layer-Lapse I manually animated layers because I only had about 30 layers in a scene, in New York I was making layer-lapses with 100-300 layers so I needed some method to help me automate my workflow. Luckily I have an engineering background I can lean on, so in early 2016 I started learning scripting in after effects, and began writing code to create different layer-lapse ‘looks’. To create a layer-lapse effect, I am assigning a unique equation to hundreds of buildings simultaneously. For each frame, every building is calculating and deciding which time of day to reveal. One example of a script that yields a ‘look’ are the waves of day or night that move through some of the shots in this film. To achieve the ‘look’ I can set parameters like the speed at which the wave moves across the screen, how rapidly each layer will switch from day to night or vice versa, and I’ll often use a random sinusoidal function to create a subtle oscillation inside the wave itself. Now I’ve probably lost half my audience but for those of you still reading, the final step is linking an action or a script to a piece of the music. One way I’ve found this can be done is creating a set of audio triggers for a song, so that every note or beat triggers a change. By linking a certain script to each of these triggers one can create computer generated layer-lapses that are animated in response to music. Admittedly, this film is still a combination of mathematical and manual animation but my goal is to create a layer-lapse film where all the animations are simply decisions made by each layer after analyzing the music and the script it was assigned. By making layer-lapses run on mathematics, there are also some really cool avenues to create interactive physical or virtual art installations where a person could actually touch and manipulate a layer-lapse scene in real time. The further down the rabbit hole of layer-lapses I go, the more opportunities for experimentation I am discovering. I love the process of creative exploration and hopefully my audience gets something from it too, thanks for watching! “One of the craziest TV shows you’ll ever see. It could revolutionize short film distribution.” -Indiewire Fresh off its premiere at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival, THE EYESLICER is a new hourlong ‘secret TV show’ from the bizarre minds of Dan Schoenbrun and Vanessa McDonnell (COLLECTIVE:UNCONSCIOUS). Like an Internet-age spiritual successor to MTV’s beloved 120 MINUTES & LIQUID TELEVISION, this ten-episode series aims to create an online safe haven for boundary-pushing, transgressive, proudly weird American filmmaking. From vérité documentary to amateur computer animation; surreal horror to remix video art; haunted high school yearbooks to Sasquatch birth rituals; time traveling cats to live web streams of your own birth – if it sounds too strange for Netflix, chances are you’ll find it on THE EYESLICER. To watch the full ten-episode, ten-hour first season of The Eyeslicer for the price of an email address, visit http://bit.ly/2ym8PKC and answer the following trivia question: Who does 'Twin Peaks’ and 'Sunset Boulevard’ have in common? (answer in one-word, all-caps). “Lovers Sleep Together” is the 8th episode of the series. It’s all about love, relationships, and sex. It features: “Gwilliam,” dir. In the 1950s, a wave of “method actors” took Hollywood by storm. Actors like James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Montgomery Clift, brought a whole new toolset and perspective on the actor’s craft to the films they performed in. The foundation of their work, however, was laid in Russia more than fifty years prior to their stardom. Stanislavski’s conception of “psychological realism” in performance challenged ideas about the essential features of the actor’s craft that had been held for centuries. In theatre before Stanislavski, acting was defined as a craft of vocal and gestural training. The role the actor played was to give life to the emotions of the text in a broad illustrative fashion. Formal categories such as melodrama, opera, vaudeville, and musicals, all played to this notion of the actor as chief representer of dramatic ideas. Stanislavski’s key insight was in seeing the actor as an experiencer of authentic emotional moments. Suddenly the craft of performance could be about seeking out a genuine internal experience of the narrative’s emotional journey. From this foundation, realism in performance began to flourish. This not only changed our fundamental idea of the actor but invited a reinvention of the whole endeavor of telling stories through drama. Teachers would adopt Stanisvlaski’s methods and ideas and elaborate upon them in American theatre schools. The result, in the 1950s, would be a new wave of actors and a style of acting that emphasized psychological realism to a greater degree than their peers in motion pictures. This idea of realism grew to dominate our notion of successful performances in cinema. Stanislavskian-realism is now central to the DNA of how we direct and read performances, whether we are conscious of it or not. I think it is important to know this history and consider its revolutionary character. Understanding the nature of Stanislavski’s insights allows us to look at other unasked questions, other foundational elements of our craft that we might take for granted. — Stanislavski’s books are still fascinating explorations of the craft of performance. —– Blu-Ray discs available here: http://bit.ly/2dPoAnt Music by Peter Nanasi, find his work here: http://bit.ly/2uBqEWk Follow me: http://twitter.com/mikeolbinski / http://bit.ly/29zcc4S / http://bit.ly/29xOE47 ——- Early on this summer when I found myself down by Santa Rosa, AZ watching a gorgeous hail core fall on the stunning desert landscape, and then later that day staring at a haboob with a stacked shelf cloud above it near the border of Mexico, I had a feeling it would be a unique monsoon. It’s funny how every year is different. That’s the beauty of chasing the summer storm season out here in the desert southwest. You never know what’s going to happen or what you might see. This year I ventured far and wide. Phoenix never saw a good dust storm all summer, but I still was able to capture a few good ones in southwest portions of the state. The cover photo for this film was halfway to Yuma standing in the middle of Interstate 8 watching an ominous wall of dust roll down the highway towards me with lightning flashing behind it. It was an incredible moment. One bonus this summer was a few successful chases up at the Grand Canyon. Finally. A couple of gorgeous sunsets, rain dumping into the Canyon, lightning at night, Milky Way…it all worked out and I’m stoked for the footage I captured there that made it into this film. I also ventured over into New Mexico twice to chase some wonderful, plains-like structure to end the monsoon this year. All told I covered about 13,000 miles and chased as far west as Desert Center, CA, as far east as Wilna, NM and as far north as Tonelea, AZ. And two great storms down in Organ Pipe National Monument, which is only about 10 miles from Mexico. I loved what I saw this year. It felt so unique. I found myself submerged in cacti and desert flora a few times with stunning light and structure. Explored places in New Mexico I hadn’t seen before. Smiled at the gasps of amazement from the crowds at the Canyon when a lightning bolt would strike. Finally discovered that the Santa Rosa area is a hotbed for supercell activity. And while it didn’t make it on time-lapse, I captured a brief tornado over downtown Phoenix! So…the film. So much effort and energy went into it. I shot over 110,000 frames of time-lapse and likely only half of it ended up in the final cut. The editing has taken me weeks and even right up until Monday evening I was still fixing and tweaking. The music is all custom, thanks to the amazing work of Peter Nanasi. PLEASE check out his website and buy his albums! I love how we work together to develop a track that seems to fit exactly with the clips I capture. I am so incredibly blessed that his work crossed my path. A quick thank-you to the workshop guests I had this summer. You guys were amazing troopers, staying out to all hours and being around for some awesome storms. In fact, I am not sure that I would have even been on the shelf cloud in the final scene of this film if it hadn’t been for my workshop. Thank you, thank you! As always though, what made it fun was sharing a lot of it with my kiddos. They made the trip up to the Grand Canyon with me once and it was such a blast of an experience. Asher joined me in New Mexico one day, just he and I, and I got to see his face light up when he captured his first ever lightning strike on video on his little iPad. To my wife Jina…we’ve come a long, long way since we started this storm chasing journey years ago. It’s not been easy all the time, especially with me being on the road so much between April and October these days. But we’ve slowly figured things out and I’m unbelievably grateful to you for your support and belief in what we’re doing together. To everyone else…thank you for your continued support of my work. I am constantly blown-away at the kindness that you show to me. And now…I hope you enjoy this film. Technical Details: I used two Canon 5DSR’s along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

NIOFAR tells the story of a French girl who went to settle in Senegal and meet its inhabitants. In Wolof, Niofiar means “to be together”. This personal film is a metaphor of the amazing and unique experience lived by Hugo’s brother. He lived for one year at Grand Mbao, a small village of Senegal. There, he shared the day to day life of the villagers, and settled completely. learning the local language, giving himself and investing himself totally to them. Over there we called him the « Sénégaulois" a mix between the words Senegal and the Gauls. Thanks to Colin, the rushes taken in Grand Mbao have a powerful strength of truth has they have been taken from the closest point you can get of the community. The characters are not disturbed by a foreign presence et forget the camera. The portraits the film depicts are fixed in authentic moments of life. When Melissa’s Dad was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, she was only 14 years old. It changed the family dynamics, and she was forced to grow up to take on the responsibility of a caregiver for her Dad. “Our roles reversed,” she said. “I had to be the parent.” We tend to think of dementia as a condition that primarily affects older persons, and issues of early-onset are often overlooked, including its impact on family members. The challenges that young caregivers face are unique, especially with having to cope with the struggles of adolescence, alongside competing demands of school and caregiving. Melissa is working to address this gap through Project We Forgot, a community platform she kickstarted, which offers support for young caregivers of persons with dementia. Melissa wished that she was more informed about her Dad’s condition so that she could be a better caregiver, amidst having to come to terms with his memory loss and confusion. “No one taught us how to feel when we watched you slowly slip away, or how to react when your memories started fading, and you stopped remembering who we were.” She wrote these words in a letter to her Dad more than ten years later. Had she known better as a teenager, perhaps there could have been more empathy and understanding. There was no one she could confide with in school, seeing that there was hardly any awareness about issues of dementia amongst her circle of friends and teachers. With lessons learned from her own experience, Melissa hopes that young caregivers won’t have to feel the same isolation like she did. Through Project We Forgot, they can access resources and be connected with others who are going through similar journeys. At the same time, Melissa actively reaches out to different institutions around Singapore to help raise awareness and support for the needs of caregivers at school or the workplace. Meaningful change can only happen when there’s increased public education, she feels. Reflecting on her journey, Melissa sees a large part of her Dad in who she is now, especially his entrepreneurial spirit, which gave her the impetus to kickstart Project We Forgot. “I hope that I’m doing you proud, Dad.” She tells him as she ends her letter. :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Project We Forgot is a community network platform to inform, empower and support caregivers to persons with dementia. It’s 2017 and computer graphics have conquered the Uncanny Valley, that strange place where things are almost real… but not quite. After decades of innovation, we’re at the point where we can conjure just about anything with software. The battle for photoreal CGI has been won, so the question is… what happens now? In this pilot film, we follow Master carver and indigenous Alaskan artist Wayne Price as he creates fine art in the traditional style of the Tlingit people. Wayne’s artistic creations cover a broad range of design and artifacts, including totem poles, dugout canoes, masks, paddles, clan hats and jewelry. Wayne works with local youth to pass on the craft and culture of the Tlingit people. Wayne takes us on a journey as he builds an adze, a traditional Tlingit wood-carving tool used by his ancestors for thousands of years. The Local is a Royal Caribbean original series, celebrating people from around the world, their unique passions and their culture. For the premiere season, we highlight three locals from Alaska: Wayne Price, Mary Smith and Dan Oberlatz. Will Gwen follow her deepest desires or will she let her embarrassment restrain her? ‘Tabook’ looks at the subject of sex in a fun loving way, highlighting the taboo that exists in society around embracing sexuality. It was crafted through digital 2D character animation (TVPaint) with paper art backgrounds, and a little bit of CG for the books. Wishing you a happy International Face Your Fears Day (October 10th)!
