In November 2017 I flew over to Portugal from the UK with huge waves inbound for Nazaré. In the morning of the big swell, Andrew had a nasty wipeout and broke his back and was rushed to hospital after being rescued by the jet ski team and brought to the shore. I’m not sure who all the surfers are but please tag them and I will add them in the credits. If you are interested in how this was filmed, there will soon be a ‘Behind The Scenes’ video coming. This is the music video for the song “Made of Love” of OY’s [oy-music.com/video] new album Space Diaspora. AFRO PUNK (US) writes: Ghanaian-Swiss singer Joy Frempong and producer & musician Lleluja-Ha are back from outer space, and they’ve brought a new sound with them that might make the future a little more colorful—if we listen. Making up the duo OY, the video to their latest single is as catchy and eye-popping as the message is powerful. In the experimental clip directed by Moritz Reichartz, Frempong chants off different nationalities as head-like shapes of various colors gyrate against each other while floating on a clear sea, leading to a climax where the heads congregate in front of a giant wall, making so much love that the partition is destroyed. Max Cooper: I had a lot of high speed train journeys recently and I love watching the wires seemingly dance around outside the window. I wondered if we could be getting fooled by a similar process during our usual experience of time, and thought it would be an interesting project for a music video set to the music created during the same journeys. The wires outside the window are static but they appear to move because of our motion past them. Perhaps our usual experience of movement could be explained by a similar process, where time is a physical dimension into which everything grows, with the present as the surface of this inflating structure. It ties in to a lot of physics ideas which are very common, and I thought it could make for an interesting music video, if I could find someone who might be able to pull it off! Luckily for me, one of my favourite visual artists, Kevin McGloughlin had already been experimenting with linked techniques and ideas, and he’s gone to town on it with a multitude of techniques and editing precision to create something pretty special. And yes, there’s certainly a nod to the original time-stretch slitscan effects of Kubrick’s 2001. I wanted to show the transition from our normal experience of time to a stretched out past as a physical structure when viewed from an alternative perspective outside of the dimensions we’re usually constrained to. One other interesting thing about this model of time is that it helps with some mind-pickling metaphysical conundrums around the sense in which the past exists. In this model it literally exists out there behind us as a physical 4D structure. If we could travel outside of our growing surface somehow and went back to the past it wouldn’t be much fun though, we’d just find solid lifeless stretched out versions of ourselves. For the music I wanted to bring these ideas of frozen moments of the past into play, and no better excuse to get stuck in with the Prophet 6 on some lush classic analogue synth sounds for the main chord sequence, and plenty of nob noodling for a dance of modulating sounds around the main sequence. I wanted to keep it fairly sparse to let the chord patch be central, and just focus on trying to make every element, including the percussion, warp a little, so you can either listen to the track from a distance and hear the harmonic ideas, or delve in to find all sorts more hiding in there. Kevin did an amazing (and painstaking) job of warping the video to sync with the audio detailing. If you’d like to receive exclusive music, mixes, video and news you can sign up to the site at http://bit.ly/2iQveKo Kevin McGloughlin: Max Cooper and I discussed ideas about space-time before embarking on the Resynthesis project. We were on the same page for the most part, though, working with Max is always insightful and he enlightened me with some really fascinating ideas about space - time. I was delighted to once again collaborate, especially with reference to ‘time’, which is such a relatable and unavoidable part of everyone and everything. The track is really beautiful, I saw the visuals in the music quite clearly from the offset. I could hear the 'time stretching’ in the melodies and synths and I was greatly inspired by it. My aspiration in this piece was to create a journey for the viewer, a passage through space and time, in an effort to represent time as a dimensional structure. I aimed to convey existence as a solid component of time, an effort to glimpse the idea that our past still exists out there in a stretched, distorted dwelling.. I wanted to capture a human / mortal essence of time, displaying brief impressions of human interactions and activity, traveling in time. All the fundamental assets were captured employing photography and realtime footage. I stretched time in both 3d and 2d space using a wide variety of time displacement techniques, ranging from 'in camera’ work to quite laborious post production work. Fun Fact..Some of the clips contain exactly one googol videos playing simultaneously. (using a method I devised some time ago, ie.the second last very short clip) Most of footage/photography was shot in Dublin Ireland, with additional shots from Co. Sligo. Working with Max always makes for an interesting time. http://bit.ly/2BdNrrN http://bit.ly/2urwwi9 http://bit.ly/2BgyV2q http://bit.ly/2iSeqTe

TEXT 500MILES TO 71777 TO DONATE AND SUPPORT OUR MISSION The purpose of this innovative short film is to start a new, universally-understood conversation around the necessity of struggle, challenge and perseverance as they relate to creating meaning in one’s life - without one, you cannot have the other. The 500 Miles film communicates the importance of this concept by telling the story of the un-purposed wild mustang and the un-purposed veteran, following both as they learn to face and navigate challenges, with the ultimate goal of discovering what their greater purpose in life is. For these mustangs, the arduous 500 mile journey through New Mexico and Arizona was their purpose-defining challenge, but we all have our own version of a “500 mile journey”. It’s the moments in life when we choose to buck up instead of give up. When we choose to take the unbeaten path instead of the easy road. It’s the moments that force us to take a hard look at ourselves, and the decisions we have been making, and decide if we have been letting life happen to us, or for us. So, the question is: What’s your 500? http://bit.ly/2A5A1RS Characters: Grant Golliher Ramon Becerra Brendon Clark Russ Lewis Landon Ames Austin Mandlebaum Mike Reilly Micah Fink Director: Josh Fletcher Cinematographer: Michael Eldredge Producer: Cale Montrone Associate Producer: Chris Douglas Field Producer: Tony Hagedorn Art Director: Souk Mounsena

Sandwiched between the borders of West Yellowstone and Big Sky, the 9 Quarter Circle Ranch is a rustic collection of log cabins and stables cradled in a valley of the Rocky Mountains. It’s here one finds Kameron Kelsey, the third-generation steward of the 9QC. The Kelsey family pride themselves on their adherence to tradition, as the ranch exists in something of a time warp, its practices mostly unchanged over the past 70 years. Due to the high elevation of the ranch, weather during the winter months is exceptionally perilous. Every fall, the ranch’s horses are taken down to a lower elevation pasture to live out the cold months in more favorable conditions. Each June, come rain or shine, the Kelseys, along with a group of a dozen or so wranglers, family, and friends, come together to push the herd 20 plus miles back up to the ranch, in a near sacred ritual they dub “The Round Up”. Of all the 9QC practices, this one is perhaps the most antiquated, and is the one the Kelsey family are most proud to preserve. It’s an exhaustive three-day marathon, one that takes them across a variety of terrain. Would it be simpler to gather the animals and truck them up to the ranch? Absolutely, but this isn’t about being easy. It’s about holding onto tradition. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Directed by: Kristopher Rey-Talley Produced by: Rad Roubeni, Kristopher Rey-Talley & Phil Pinto Executive Produced by: Jinhee Chu, Rad Roubeni Photography by: Ryan Dickie, Sam Wootton, Josh Goleman, Kristopher Rey-Talley Edited by: Alex Camilleri, Kristopher Rey-Talley, Ed Yonaitis Color by: Mike Howell Sound Design by: Greg Tobler, Colin Alexander Aerial Photography by: Brendan Murphy

This work utilizes the own approach of the digital medium itself to deconstruct, to form the subliminal synesthesia visually and to create a fictional experience for the mind. 精神世界在面对强制规则化的重压后,爆发的一系列有关反思、暴力、自毁,排解的情绪。作品利用数字媒介自身的解构方式,形成潜意识的视觉通感,创造虚构的情感体验。 Director: Liu Sha Original Music: Ma Yao Sound Design: Zhai Xiaofei 2016 “It Is My Fault” is this week’s Staff Pick Premiere! Song by Temples: ‘A Question Isn’t Answered’ Written by James Bagshaw, Thomas Walmsley, Adam Smith, Samuel Toms Published by Imagem Music Courtesy of Heavenly Recordings Read more on http://win.gs/FramesOfMind Check out how how Matt Jones visualises tricks and pushes MTB freestyle skills to the very limit, providing a fresh view into how elite athletes use sports psychology to compete at the highest level. Using gripping rotoscoping techniques the latest film sees Red Bull’s young gun demonstrate unique tricks including world-firsts in freestyle mountain biking: Bum Slide, 270 Rim Bonk, Hitching Post Flip to Feet, Decade Tsunami, Superman Backflip to tuc no-hander. Within the film, an advanced editing technique ‘rotoscoping’ was used by Cut Media to enable the audience to see what’s going through Matt’s head as he prepared for seemingly impossible tricks. This required an intricate process, cutting out countless sequential frames, in order to create the floating ‘traces’ seen in the final production.

In recognition of the Transgender Day of Remembrance/Resilience on November 20th, 2017 and the start of Trans Awareness Week, we are proud to release our short documentary entitled “Handsome and Majestic”. A multiple award-winning 12 minute film that has played at over 25 festivals worldwide from Manitoba to New Zealand, this short documentary profiles Milan, a 15-year-old transgender boy growing up in the northern Canadian city of Prince George, B.C. As a recently transitioned transgender boy, Milan deals with discrimination from his peers and teachers at school, as he seeks to find other kids like himself. His parents are open and supportive throughout his transition, and his sister Lulu never questioned that Milan was her brother. However, at his elementary school, he must face the lack of education, intolerance and even assault. When Milan meets another transgender boy in his neighbourhood, he finally finds someone his age who understands and shares his experience. With the support of his friends and family, Milan has become a role model and an advocate for trans individuals in his small community and beyond. As part of the release of the film, the filmmakers are also running a “GoFundMe” campaign in order to raise funds to get Milan fitted for a suit in New York City by renowned tailors Bindle & Keep, who specialize in suits for non-binary and trans people. After “Handsome and Majestic” screened alongside “Suited”, a feature documentary about them at Hot Docs Festival 2016, the tailors have generously offered to make Milan a suit of his own. “A new born light enters the world, but slowly begins to adapt, to fit in, conditioned by expectations, until the light fades away slowly and it’s too late to turn back to it’s true self.” Lights is a simple metaphor that visually examines all those feelings, dreams and possibilities that we unconsciously let go of during our life as we slowly adapt to what surrounds us. Step by step we leave behind our true selves, something that slowly fades away in the background, like a shadow we only half remember. When our time comes to move on, if we finally look back to what could have been, we may think “what if…” Direction & Design: Alessandro Novelli. Through this incomprehensible trauma, the sisters draw ever closer, only to drift apart yet again. “A familial sci-fi drama that surrounds its gruesome finale with moments of carefully constructed empathy, [Sisters] is a study in abstract horror and potential mental illness. With this film we take a new approach to war, inviting veterans to rewrite their histories in places where they served and heal wounds deeper than flesh and bone. Traditional time-lapses are constrained by the idea that there is a single universal clock. In the spirit of Einstein’s relativity theory, layer-lapses assign distinct clocks to any number of objects or regions in a scene. Each of these clocks may start at any point in time, and tick at any rate. The result is a visual time dilation effect known as layer-lapse. After releasing “Boston Layer-Lapse” a few years ago, I was able to quit my engineering job to focus on time-lapse and film making. New York City was the obvious subject for my next film, the immense skyline was ideal. However I was facing an unknown creative challenge: when I created Boston Layer-Lapse I manually animated layers because I only had about 30 layers in a scene, in New York I was making layer-lapses with 100-300 layers so I needed some method to help me automate my workflow. Luckily I have an engineering background I can lean on, so in early 2016 I started learning scripting in after effects, and began writing code to create different layer-lapse ‘looks’. To create a layer-lapse effect, I am assigning a unique equation to hundreds of buildings simultaneously. For each frame, every building is calculating and deciding which time of day to reveal. One example of a script that yields a ‘look’ are the waves of day or night that move through some of the shots in this film. To achieve the ‘look’ I can set parameters like the speed at which the wave moves across the screen, how rapidly each layer will switch from day to night or vice versa, and I’ll often use a random sinusoidal function to create a subtle oscillation inside the wave itself. Now I’ve probably lost half my audience but for those of you still reading, the final step is linking an action or a script to a piece of the music. One way I’ve found this can be done is creating a set of audio triggers for a song, so that every note or beat triggers a change. By linking a certain script to each of these triggers one can create computer generated layer-lapses that are animated in response to music. Admittedly, this film is still a combination of mathematical and manual animation but my goal is to create a layer-lapse film where all the animations are simply decisions made by each layer after analyzing the music and the script it was assigned. By making layer-lapses run on mathematics, there are also some really cool avenues to create interactive physical or virtual art installations where a person could actually touch and manipulate a layer-lapse scene in real time. The further down the rabbit hole of layer-lapses I go, the more opportunities for experimentation I am discovering. I love the process of creative exploration and hopefully my audience gets something from it too, thanks for watching! We may call BD Athlete Joe Grant a “runner guy,” but honestly, those words fail to give a true notion of what he actually does. Truth is, Joe Grant heads into the mountains for a lot more than running. And what he finds out there, high among the craggy peaks, is what he likes to call rhythm. In this film, we captured Joe in his element, doing his thing and searching for that rhythm, deep in the heart of the Alps. Enjoy. Video: Cheyne Lempe

In the 1950s, a wave of “method actors” took Hollywood by storm. Actors like James Dean, Marlon Brando, and Montgomery Clift, brought a whole new toolset and perspective on the actor’s craft to the films they performed in. The foundation of their work, however, was laid in Russia more than fifty years prior to their stardom. Stanislavski’s conception of “psychological realism” in performance challenged ideas about the essential features of the actor’s craft that had been held for centuries. In theatre before Stanislavski, acting was defined as a craft of vocal and gestural training. The role the actor played was to give life to the emotions of the text in a broad illustrative fashion. Formal categories such as melodrama, opera, vaudeville, and musicals, all played to this notion of the actor as chief representer of dramatic ideas. Stanislavski’s key insight was in seeing the actor as an experiencer of authentic emotional moments. Suddenly the craft of performance could be about seeking out a genuine internal experience of the narrative’s emotional journey. From this foundation, realism in performance began to flourish. This not only changed our fundamental idea of the actor but invited a reinvention of the whole endeavor of telling stories through drama. Teachers would adopt Stanisvlaski’s methods and ideas and elaborate upon them in American theatre schools. The result, in the 1950s, would be a new wave of actors and a style of acting that emphasized psychological realism to a greater degree than their peers in motion pictures. This idea of realism grew to dominate our notion of successful performances in cinema. Stanislavskian-realism is now central to the DNA of how we direct and read performances, whether we are conscious of it or not. I think it is important to know this history and consider its revolutionary character. Understanding the nature of Stanislavski’s insights allows us to look at other unasked questions, other foundational elements of our craft that we might take for granted. — Stanislavski’s books are still fascinating explorations of the craft of performance. Sometimes the commissions that are the most fun are ones where you’re given nothing but a script, with the freedom to construct a visual narrative around it. This short film for the School of Life charts the relationships of two couples engaged in the cycle of nagging. A shirking husband and his long-suffering wife, and a daughter who has become unreceptive to her mother’s tyrannical lessons. ‘Nagging is one of the most understandable but counterproductive patterns of behaviour – that kicks in when we have failed to teach someone what we want and are feeling tired and bruised emotionally. But if we really want others to change, there is no alternative but to gather our strengths and try to convey information in a way that can be understood by someone else.’ Designed, Directed, Animated & Produced by: Steve Kirby Written & Narrated by: Alain de Botton Sound Design by: Trevor Richardson / Sonosanctus Additional Animation by: Andrew Embury Client: The School of Life

When a piece of metal salt is dropped in the solution of sodium silicate, a membrane of insoluble metal silicate is formed. Due to the osmotic pressure, water enters the membrane and breaks it, generating more insoluble membranes. This cycle repeats and the salt grows into all kinds of interesting forms. This film recorded the osmotic growth of 6 salts inside sodium silicate solution. The growth is so life-like, no wonder Stéphane Leduc thought it might have something to do with the mechanism life over 100 years ago. —– Blu-Ray discs available here: http://bit.ly/2dPoAnt Music by Peter Nanasi, find his work here: http://bit.ly/2uBqEWk Follow me: http://twitter.com/mikeolbinski / http://bit.ly/29zcc4S / http://bit.ly/29xOE47 ——- Early on this summer when I found myself down by Santa Rosa, AZ watching a gorgeous hail core fall on the stunning desert landscape, and then later that day staring at a haboob with a stacked shelf cloud above it near the border of Mexico, I had a feeling it would be a unique monsoon. It’s funny how every year is different. That’s the beauty of chasing the summer storm season out here in the desert southwest. You never know what’s going to happen or what you might see. This year I ventured far and wide. Phoenix never saw a good dust storm all summer, but I still was able to capture a few good ones in southwest portions of the state. The cover photo for this film was halfway to Yuma standing in the middle of Interstate 8 watching an ominous wall of dust roll down the highway towards me with lightning flashing behind it. It was an incredible moment. One bonus this summer was a few successful chases up at the Grand Canyon. Finally. A couple of gorgeous sunsets, rain dumping into the Canyon, lightning at night, Milky Way…it all worked out and I’m stoked for the footage I captured there that made it into this film. I also ventured over into New Mexico twice to chase some wonderful, plains-like structure to end the monsoon this year. All told I covered about 13,000 miles and chased as far west as Desert Center, CA, as far east as Wilna, NM and as far north as Tonelea, AZ. And two great storms down in Organ Pipe National Monument, which is only about 10 miles from Mexico. I loved what I saw this year. It felt so unique. I found myself submerged in cacti and desert flora a few times with stunning light and structure. Explored places in New Mexico I hadn’t seen before. Smiled at the gasps of amazement from the crowds at the Canyon when a lightning bolt would strike. Finally discovered that the Santa Rosa area is a hotbed for supercell activity. And while it didn’t make it on time-lapse, I captured a brief tornado over downtown Phoenix! So…the film. So much effort and energy went into it. I shot over 110,000 frames of time-lapse and likely only half of it ended up in the final cut. The editing has taken me weeks and even right up until Monday evening I was still fixing and tweaking. The music is all custom, thanks to the amazing work of Peter Nanasi. PLEASE check out his website and buy his albums! I love how we work together to develop a track that seems to fit exactly with the clips I capture. I am so incredibly blessed that his work crossed my path. A quick thank-you to the workshop guests I had this summer. You guys were amazing troopers, staying out to all hours and being around for some awesome storms. In fact, I am not sure that I would have even been on the shelf cloud in the final scene of this film if it hadn’t been for my workshop. Thank you, thank you! As always though, what made it fun was sharing a lot of it with my kiddos. They made the trip up to the Grand Canyon with me once and it was such a blast of an experience. Asher joined me in New Mexico one day, just he and I, and I got to see his face light up when he captured his first ever lightning strike on video on his little iPad. To my wife Jina…we’ve come a long, long way since we started this storm chasing journey years ago. It’s not been easy all the time, especially with me being on the road so much between April and October these days. But we’ve slowly figured things out and I’m unbelievably grateful to you for your support and belief in what we’re doing together. To everyone else…thank you for your continued support of my work. I am constantly blown-away at the kindness that you show to me. And now…I hope you enjoy this film. Technical Details: I used two Canon 5DSR’s along with a Canon 11-24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm and Sigma Art 50mm. Manfrotto tripods. The final product was edited in Lightroom with LR Timelapse, After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Moodles is a short animation based on the effects of negative emotions on one’s self. It turns built up tension, stress, and anxiety into creative catharsis. ‘Goodbye, Old Glory’ is a vérité-style short documentary capturing the protests surrounding the controversial municipal removal of the Jefferson Davis Confederate monument in New Orleans, Louisiana. Shot entirely at night, this film is equal parts entertaining, thought provoking, and downright disturbing. The film objectively balances on-the-fly interviews from both the Confederate protesters and ANTIFA counter-protestors in order to demonstrate the cataclysmic political divide happening across American society today. i-D Writeup: http://bit.ly/2zpXIEt The video is centred around three young couples, in three separate 24-hour periods as they spend an entire day together in one motel room with no phones, televisions, or other distractions. Each comes with their own unique histories, proclivities, and dynamics. We watch their intimate looks, conversations, and touches - juxtaposing their subjective passions with the indifferent transient space of a single motel room. Full case — http://bit.ly/2h3aEbZ That is a personal project that have been made as an extension for commercial project. At a spring 2017 I was helping ONY studio to present their project for the Tretyakov Gallery — you could check it below. One part of it was a cg-short with spray cans flying around in a for of letter T — the main element of a new id-system that ONY had made for the Gallery. The point was to complement a real camera shot and make a sort of transition to cg-graphic so we could easily present the id-style on different mediums using cg. After work was done I have challenged myself to do a similar short for every Gallery’s direction — classic paintings, modern art, franchise and others — which presented by seven colours in id-system. Music — Improvisation by Alina Petrova & Kira Weinstein
