NIOFAR tells the story of a French girl who went to settle in Senegal and meet its inhabitants. In Wolof, Niofiar means “to be together”. This personal film is a metaphor of the amazing and unique experience lived by Hugo’s brother. He lived for one year at Grand Mbao, a small village of Senegal. There, he shared the day to day life of the villagers, and settled completely. learning the local language, giving himself and investing himself totally to them. Over there we called him the « Sénégaulois" a mix between the words Senegal and the Gauls. Thanks to Colin, the rushes taken in Grand Mbao have a powerful strength of truth has they have been taken from the closest point you can get of the community. The characters are not disturbed by a foreign presence et forget the camera. The portraits the film depicts are fixed in authentic moments of life. What has that got to do with coffee? As Hog, a long time resident of a certain south London district known as Cla’am searches for his friend JJ, he starts to see patterns and signs pointing to a mysterious plot. But no one will listen to him. As the mystery deepens CLA’AM is the story of Hog’s mission to expose the conspiracy, and save his friend. Is it all in his head? Or might the disappearance of the locals really be somehow connected to all the new coffee shops. This video is what i saw, in 3 minutes. This is my video-attempt to make people aware of this misunderstood part of the world, spread the word, and try to make things change. In the XIII century, Kashmir was described by Persians poets as Heaven on Earth. Since the Independence in 1947, Kashmir initially decided to remain independent, choosing not to become a part of either Pakistan or India. Since then, this Heaven slowly faded to a place where blood spilling is part of daily life. But the Kashmiri people is the most welcoming and hospitable on earth, taking life in such an easy way, that is sometimes hard to believe that it’s sadly a war zone. Shot almost only on 28mm, 4K. When Melissa’s Dad was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, she was only 14 years old. It changed the family dynamics, and she was forced to grow up to take on the responsibility of a caregiver for her Dad. “Our roles reversed,” she said. “I had to be the parent.” We tend to think of dementia as a condition that primarily affects older persons, and issues of early-onset are often overlooked, including its impact on family members. The challenges that young caregivers face are unique, especially with having to cope with the struggles of adolescence, alongside competing demands of school and caregiving. Melissa is working to address this gap through Project We Forgot, a community platform she kickstarted, which offers support for young caregivers of persons with dementia. Melissa wished that she was more informed about her Dad’s condition so that she could be a better caregiver, amidst having to come to terms with his memory loss and confusion. “No one taught us how to feel when we watched you slowly slip away, or how to react when your memories started fading, and you stopped remembering who we were.” She wrote these words in a letter to her Dad more than ten years later. Had she known better as a teenager, perhaps there could have been more empathy and understanding. There was no one she could confide with in school, seeing that there was hardly any awareness about issues of dementia amongst her circle of friends and teachers. With lessons learned from her own experience, Melissa hopes that young caregivers won’t have to feel the same isolation like she did. Through Project We Forgot, they can access resources and be connected with others who are going through similar journeys. At the same time, Melissa actively reaches out to different institutions around Singapore to help raise awareness and support for the needs of caregivers at school or the workplace. Meaningful change can only happen when there’s increased public education, she feels. By superimposing a rectangular grid on the earth surface, a grid built from exact square miles, the spherical deviations have to be fixed. After all, the grid has only two dimensions. Genevieve Iron Lightning is a young Lakota dancer on the Cheyenne River Reservation, one of the poorest communities in the US. Unemployment, addiction, alcoholism, and suicide are all challenges for Lakota on the reservation. For nearly a hundred years, it was illegal to practice Lakota customs. Now, the Cheyenne River Youth Project is working with young people like Genevieve to create a stronger economic and cultural future—and they’re using their Lakota heritage to get there. “Lakota in America” is the third film in Square’s For Every Kind of Dream series. Autumn is one of the most beautiful times to visit Denali National Park. Shades of red, yellow, and green cover the mountain sides while bears, moose, and Dall’s sheep can be seen wandering across the landscape. And as the season starts to transition into winter, passing storms leave the highest mountain peaks with a light dusting of snow, while the northen lights can be seen dancing across the sky on clear nights. After spending just three days around Denali last September, I put this short film together showcasing the park’s impressive landscapes and weather patterns during this time of year. In this pilot film, we follow Master carver and indigenous Alaskan artist Wayne Price as he creates fine art in the traditional style of the Tlingit people. Wayne’s artistic creations cover a broad range of design and artifacts, including totem poles, dugout canoes, masks, paddles, clan hats and jewelry. Wayne works with local youth to pass on the craft and culture of the Tlingit people. Wayne takes us on a journey as he builds an adze, a traditional Tlingit wood-carving tool used by his ancestors for thousands of years. The Local is a Royal Caribbean original series, celebrating people from around the world, their unique passions and their culture. In 1957, a Soviet street dog named Laika launched into space aboard Sputnik-2 and became the first animal to orbit the Earth. This is her story. When the international press reported that the Soviets sent a dog into orbit, the public freaked. Not because communism was beating democracy in the space race, but because how could anyone send a dog—alone—into space. If there’s one global commonality, it’s this: everyone loves dogs. So, the Soviets spun the story. Laika, the space dog, became a national hero. Yes, she died on her one way mission. But, she gloriously orbited Earth for over a week until her eventual, peaceful death. And, because of Laika’s sacrifice, the Soviet space program was now years ahead of the Americans… But, none of that was true. Based on declassified Soviet space program documents as well as primary source archive from back in the day, this is a revised version of Laika’s one way trip. In her words. ‘The Duck’ is a “proof of concept” film which I produced and directed in 1998, almost twenty years ago. Our work on ‘Space Jam’ was just finished and I came up with an idea for a feature film about a real duck that turns into a cartoon and decides to become a super hero, rivalling and competing with existing super heroes. We projected this film at all the major studios to pitch the idea and came very close to making it. But alas, it all collapsed in the end and the film was never made. A few weeks ago, I found a low contrast 35mm negative and a screening print buried in my cupboard. They were scanned at Cinelabs, UK, by their wonderful team of lab technicians. Looking it at it now, it is way too long and if I had the sound elements separate, I’d cut it down. I guess at the time it was too difficult to cut out footage since we put so much effort into the sets and the animation. Every frame felt precious, a mistake many young film makers make. But it is what it is. The animated woman is a blatant “homage” to Jessica Rabbit but I hope that twenty years on, I am forgiven. The team that worked with me on this was amazing, a great bunch of people, both the Live Action and the Animation crew. Now, for the first time, ‘The Duck’ is online, uncut. I will post the end credits separately since they are almost as long again. Enjoy!

People have opinions about skier Caroline Gleich: Inspirational. Gumby. Social media star. Role model. Model masquerading as a mountaineer. At sixteen, she stumbled upon a copy of the cult classic guidebook The Chuting Gallery. Irreverent and wonderfully arbitrary, the guidebook lays out a set of 90 ski mountaineering lines across Utah’s Wasatch Mountains. They were difficult and dangerous. When she first said out loud she wanted to ski them, she was met with laughter. “Maybe it was because I was five feet tall, or I was a little blonde girl, but I remember that clearly — and it didn’t feel good” says Gleich. After a decade building her skills, Gleich set out to complete her vision and become the skier she dreamt of being. “Follow Through” is a story of loss, belonging and desire for respect. Official Music Video for “In Dust / In Us’ by Binkbeats. Check the making of here: http://bit.ly/2xeHBE8 The video for In Dust / In Us is a visual exploration of the chemistry between two forces that is equally attractive and destructive. Months of tests and experimentation resulted in a detailed choreography in which every movement is triggered by the music. Every shot was composed in a fish tank, with rice paper, string, condensed milk and food coloring the only props. Rogier placed a series of mirrors into the tank, producing groups of objects whose movements seem to be perfectly synchronized. This effect expanded the individual visual compositions into a seamless dance performance. Special thanks to Gauthier Idrac for helping me through the crazy testfase of this video.

A genius who is able to communicate the best and worst of our common nature, and has done so in an unprecedented, universal cinematic language. Few have been able to equal his artistic success, because frankly, he makes it look easy. I made this video essay to provide a window into the mind of a socially conscious filmmaker who explored ideas about our common existence and tried to present them to in new, interesting ways to audiences. His goal was never to make an escapist film solely for the special effects and explosions, but it was to give his audiences a greater understanding of our shared humanity. True, he sometimes fell short. “Attack of the Clones” is a bit weird, to be sure. But he was always true to himself, his voice and his stories. All this to say: I would rather watch a flawed movie by an imperfect genius than a movie made by a voiceless committee.
