Thanks to social media we often get blips and a few laughs from behind the scenes at Dane Reynolds’ house. His wife Courtney (@NapkinApocalypse)’s Instagram is must-see social media. Between Sammy, Boogie, Pam and the pigeons, it’s content cute overload. And beyond that there’s Dane, the man behind those scenes, is front and center in his scenes. Dane recently produced Chapter 11, his more or less tell-all about the prime of his professional surfing career and the highs and hurdles stemming from the interesting challenges it presented him personally. Above he talks about his next prime. Building a continually growing family, starting his new brand Former now that he’s left Quiksilver, and traversing the world that comes with all that. It’s a lot of new in his world. He still loves surfing. Sitting in the parking lot at Emma Wood. And the occasional Modelo. But we went over to get a look at how Dane’s next chapter is coming along.

A conversation on style and creative stoke with the SoCal artist A surfer in an Andy Davis painting usually shows just enough face, trimming down the line, or maybe surfed-out and swinging in a hammock, brim of the hat tipped low, to show…who? You. Me. The featureless subjects in Davis’ works are any one of us, a connection drawn from one of Davis’ inspirations, John Severson, whose opening line in the first issue of The Surfer, like an unmarked face, was both a faraway and personal call: “In this crowded world, the surfer can still seek and find the perfect day, the perfect wave, and be alone with the surf and his thoughts.” “My biggest influence in the surfing world with [my art] was John Severson,” says Davis. “Making films, and then starting [SURFER] magazine, shooting the photos, writing the articles, doing the illustrations — It was so insane. That’s where it all came about for me, along with watching a lot of old films, looking at a lot of photography.” Davis just began a month-long exhibition, Eye Yi Yi, in Malibu’s Trancas Country Market, through July 1st. For those who know his work, the show is an artistic departure. There are no waves, no boards involved. For Davis, these subjects still derive their spirit from surfing, set in acrylic scenes that flit with movement, energy, and flow. If you surf, he says, you can see it. Even if you don’t surf, you’re pulled toward the grace of the image, a subject’s dance in a summer sun’s light. “Andy’s art exemplifies surf stoke more clearly than anyone else’s,” artist Thomas Campbell says about Davis. “I think that’s why people identify with his work. Looking at a lineup from the top of a hill or observing some faceless humanoid simply getting tubed from a cool, non-invasive perspective. That’s what surfing is about, not all banners and bullshit.” We spent an afternoon with Davis in Malibu, where he and artist Randall Christopher were busy with the final preparations for the show’s opening reception in late May. He spoke candidly about his evolution as an artist, his creative process, and his response to the emotion produced through his work. “It’s pretty neat to feel like you made something that meant something to someone,” says Davis. “That they’re happy you made it, and that it took them out of their day to day, and they appreciate it. That it touched them in some way. It reminds them of something. New York is a cold-hearted bitch. She’s the prettiest girl you’ve ever laid eyes on that you know could break your heart at any moment. There’s a price to pay and it’s not just on the price tag. You wake up at war with the world and then the buzz of the battlefield rings around the clock. To skate through New York is one of the most exhilarating but exhausting experiences. Before you know it you’re too tired from skating to the spot to actually skate the spot. People are in your way everywhere and they all need something from you. The biggest police force in the country is out for you too. You gotta hustle just to exist in New York and excelling relies on the stars aligning. The most dramatic weather has trampled the urban jungle and it’s riddled with cracks, potholes, glass, rubbish and weather-beaten asphalt. A charcoal animation using ash salvaged from The Mackintosh Building fire at The Glasgow School of Art. The film documents the Ash to Art project which transformed the worthless by-product of the fire into 25 priceless works of art. In 2014, The Glasgow School of Art’s Mackintosh building, a symbol of British art, was reduced to ash. 25 world-famous artists including Grayson Perry, David Shrigley and Sir Antony Gormley were asked to turn a piece of charcoal salvaged from the Mackintosh Building fire into art. The work was auctioned at Christie’s to fund the rebuild. The film was commissioned by J. Walter Thompson (JWT London) and produced at Jelly London. Symmetry underlines our whole understanding of the universe. And the deeper we look, the more symmetries we find, reflecting our world in new and beautiful ways. Symmetry is vital to understanding and predicting how our universe works. The relationship between symmetry and the mechanics of the universe is fundamental to physics. From Noether’s theorem to the new and exciting world of local symmetries being revealed by modern day physics, Tara Shears explores the physics of symmetry. By revealing nature’s parameters, symmetry gives definition to the world as we understand it. It is a fundamental principle that makes phenomena repeatable and predictable. But if symmetries are so pervasive and influential in our world, why do we see so much asymmetry and chaos? This animation was produced by Rosanna Wan, our 2016-17 animator-in-residence, supported by the Sfumato Foundation.

Each painting represents four important stages of landscape art in Chinese history. Based on the original paintings, we built the sets and animated little character inside- all frame by frame. “Roller Coaster” During my trip to Kolkata, India I could only think of one word: Roller Coaster. This film Rollercoaster is the visualization of my feelings, fears and emotions. And therefor probably not the same feelings other people will have while visiting this country. I’m a Cuban filmmaker born in Havana, living in Holland. During my childhood in the streets of Havana I’ve seen many things. But compared to 1 week India I realized that my life in the streets in Havana weren’t that bad after all. The one thing that stays on my mind was a little baby sleeping alone in the streets, which made me think of my own daughter who grows up protected and loved. The energy of this country, the spirituality of the people and the spark in their eyes makes this the most special trip I made in my whole life. On June 11th, 1997, Philippe Kahn created the first camera phone solution to share pictures instantly on public networks. The impetus for this invention was the birth of Kahn’s daughter, when he jerry-rigged a mobile phone with a digital camera and sent photos in real time. In 2016 Time Magazine included Kahn’s first camera phone photo in their list of the 100 most influential photos of all time.

A JOURNEY THROUGH SOUTHERN AFRICA’S FORGOTTEN MOUNTAINS There are few roads in Lesotho. There are even fewer mountain bikers. Here the horse is supreme and the myriad horse trails that have been carved through its steep and rugged mountains are its lifeblood. Horsemen ply these trails, just as they have for generations, riding between villages that have remained unchanged over centuries. Amidst this scene frozen in time is Isaac, a twenty-two year old horseman who is bridging the gap between old and new. For a week in April 2017, Isaac - or Leputhing Molapo to use his Basotho name - rode a 180 Kilometre traverse of the mountains of his home country. It was a ride like his father had done before him, but this time he was leading two mountain bikers. Following Isaac were Canadian freerider Kevin Landry and Swiss ex-downhill racer Claudio Caluori, both embarking on a journey that will showcase the beautiful unknown landscapes of this small country. Riding only horse trails, it’s a journey laden with physical challenges for all, but it’s a journey that will cement friendships between a traditional blanket-wearing horseman and two state-of-the-art bike-wielding mountain bikers. For two pioneering mountain bikers this ride is the most adventurous undertaking they have ever made. For one horseman, its a ride that heralds a new dawn. In April 2017 they travelled to Lesotho and working with Sky Adventures to provide support and logistics, they set out to document this journey and the unique chapter in Lesotho’s history it represents. Driven by their passion to create a unique film, Tobias Steinigeweg and Maximilian Stolarow shared the rocky trails and high mountain passes and abandoned trading post accommodations with the riders. In the wake of Katrina, New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward was one of the few neighborhoods where relief came slowly. Less than 25% of its pre-Katrina population has returned and many houses have been abandoned or mowed down. As a result, the USDA officially listed the neighborhood as a “food desert”, defined as urban areas without access to affordable food in a five-mile radius. Burnell Cotlon returned to his home neighborhood in 2007 and was dismayed by what he saw. He pleaded with major chain stores to open up in the Ward, but the ongoing reconstruction and slow repopulation kept them away. Cotlon decided he’d open up his own shops and restore the community one small business at a time. He learned carpentry and electrical work through YouTube videos so that he could build all his operations on a budget. Due to the very high selection standards, less than 2% of the shots taken were used to create this immersive video. First, paints are mixed, then they are “opened”, a specific process that we have worked out while on a trip in Japan. “GALAXY GATES” is an experimental dreamlike video rocking us smoothly through circular moves. Ty Moore has been a Marine longer than he hasn’t. After 5 deployments he has seen his fair share of trauma in the theatre of war. Ty was trained to handle trauma. By his own account he isn’t afraid of anything. That is until the trauma was in Ty’s own home. Jenn, his wife, was diagnosed with soft tissue sarcoma, a very aggressive cancer in her ribs. Like they have done throughout their marriage they persevered. They both thought this would be the worst thing their family ever went through, they were wrong. Shaving for Beginners is the story of Ty, a father, a Marine, and a husband, as he takes his brokenness from situations outside his control and creates hope for him, his family, and his fellow servicemen and women. The sequences are cross-sectional photographic scans of pieces of hardwood, burls and branches. It is a straightforward technique but one which is brutally tedious to complete.
