Those of you that still believe in science understand the limitations of our perceptions, and it’s no secret that many creatures exceed our abilities to interpret the world around us. The idea that we have to process the sensory data coming into our brains makes it seem like we are already a step removed from the real world. So what exactly are we missing? What do animals experience that we can’t, and how do our human perceptions vary from person to person? While this film does nothing to answer these questions, time-lapse and infrared photography do, in a metaphorical sort of way, extend our sensory abilities so we can imagine a world beyond ours. Ultimately I think this is what draws us to these forms, not to solve the mystery, but to flirt with it’s boundaries. In 1562, Flemish artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder completed a painting called “The Triumph Of Death”. In this panoramic landscape the sky is blotted out by black smoke; ships and dead fish litter the ocean shore; and an army of skeletons experiment with myriad death techniques. The living are badly outnumbered and the variety of fated tortures seems endless. There is little room for whimsy in this tableaux. Over 200 years earlier, a nasty plague, commonly known as “The Black Death”, left a cruel and massive mark on European civilization, wiping out half of Europe’s total population. This was a quiet pervasion of death - an invisible pathogen carried by herds of tired rats. This plague triggered a series of social and economic upheavals with profound effects on the history of medieval Europe, guiding its survivors into the sort of self-inflicted darkness pictured by the Elder Bruegel. Looking back at this historical trajectory, Peter Burr, Mark Fingerhut, and Forma have created a spiraling interdimensional narrative aptly titled DESCENT - a meditation on one of humanity’s blackest hours. Taking the form of a desktop application, descent.exe gives the user a brief glimpse of a world descending into darkness - an unrelenting plague indifferent to the struggles of the user. There is a silver lining, however, tucked into the software’s final sweep. An equanimous watcher, reduced to a single eye, looks on as the plague of rats that has infested your desktop destroys itself. Max Cooper Symmetry is one of the most fundamental principles of nature, and also forms the basis of music. So this music video is an important early chapter in the Emergence audio-visual project, which starts with visualisations of the basic building blocks of nature, setting the stage for the physical universe to come into being, and later planets, life, civilisation, and technology (the whole story and project is explained at: http://bit.ly/2mklx6T). Symmetry is the idea that one aspect of a system can change while another remains constant. The idea of natural laws themselves, rely on the forms of symmetry that mean the same forces will apply to you as they do to me, independently of our position in space or time. And scientists searches for natures symmetries lie at the heart of much of our best models of reality (see Noether’s Theorem or more recent uses of symmetries in things like the ‘amplituhedron’!). The principle is also responsible for music, in that our enjoyment of tonality, melody, harmony and rhythm comes from our subconscious appreciation of different types of patterns (i.e. symmetries) in sound waves. The idea of Symmetry was explored in the video by Kevin McGloughlin, using simple symmetrical forms (primarily the circle), and symmetrical operations applied to them - rotations, translations and reflections. The animation demonstrates the beauty of this simple concept when applied in an iterative journey towards ever increasing complexity, both visually and musically. The audio track originally came from preparations for a live piano and electronics show with Tom Hodge. I had some chords and glitches we were playing with in combination with a simple piano motif. We decided to try some live Fender Rhodes with it during practice and it all came to life. Luckily we recorded the whole session so I had a load of stock content to play with when it came to turning the project into the album intro. My reasoning was that the intro should be about symmetry because of it’s basic role in nature, and the development and form of the track, going so glitchy from a simple melodic motif starting point, should work with applications of ever more complex symmetrical manipulation - emergence from symmetry, just as Kevin delivered. Amazingly, Kevin didn’t use automated sync points from the stems of the audio project - or to put it another way, Kevin painstakingly set up all of those edits by hand, hats off to him for his perseverance on that! Thanks for having a read, watch and a listen! - max ———————————————————————————————————————- When I first heard Symmetry I was blown away by its impact and it really struck a chord with me… On hearing the concept for the track, this feeling was empowered tenfold. After much discussion with Max, we arrived at a conclusive concept for the visual. I represented conservation laws by the use of a simple circle repetition. This circle form took on many new characteristics and evolved in complexity throughout the course of it’s journey, though every new form is an evolution / adaptation of the initial circle. I used a variety of techniques in an attempt to convey the idea of this ever evolving complexity within symmetry. Starting with minimal moire patterns, moving into 3d depth and finally ending up with massive distortions and adaptations using a technique I developed 'Digi-Cut’, displaying various moments in time offset by tiny fractions. This was an effort to demonstrate pre-universe ideas and the introduction of organic matter in relation to symmetry. It was an absolute honour to work on this project with Max, in particular on 'Symmetry’, which is my personal favourite piece on Emergence. Following the path of Strange Freedom´s previous videos we wanted to move from rather materialistic and abstract creations towards a glimpse of humaneness but still up to one’s neck in morass. In particular we focused on the most common feature of identification: the human face. At first, it seems defenseless, even motionless, dead, fading into the background like stone. It looks like endless layers of dust and debris smothering every pore, every twitch of expression. All blessings and wounds paint traces onto faces. »Lay down your weapons« describes a long battle to survive. This music video is based on thousands of single macroscopic and microscopic photographies. This is the sailing vessel Vienna, 36 feet in length, a beam 11.5 ft wide, mast 52 ft tall. This journey takes place mere miles from the harbor of Vancouver, where Vienna was built in 1982. Directed by Matt Lambert, it tells a non-linear Romeo and Juliet-like tale, replacing “fair Verona” with scenic rural Germany. The video was produced by Iconoclast in collaboration with The FADER and !K7, and it’s debuting above. The new clip, which was filmed gorgeously by Control cinematographer Martin Ruhe, is a heartbreaking story about outsiders—in this case, queer ones. Similar to stories about forbidden romance, it ends with unspeakable violence. It’s all set against Mikky’s string-heavy new track, which was produced by and features Woodkid. According to Mykki Blanco and Matt Lambert, the powerful “High School Never Ends” video is also about the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe. “It never once overtly comments on orientation or race, but only ideas of ‘us’ and 'them,’“ said Lambert. “I had once thought Europe was my safe haven from American white supremacy, and how wrong I became,” Mykki Blanco added. Common Ground - A Finisterre Film by Luke Pilbeam Featuring - Easkey Britton, Tom Kay, Sandy Kerr, Noah Lane, Fergal Smith and Matt Smith Produced by - David Gray, Tom Kay and Matt Smith http://bit.ly/2kUT2eg November saw the team gather for the first time deep in NW Ireland. For some this was the first meet, for others a welcome reunion of familiar faces. We walked far, ate well, surfed hard and lived for a while, sharing stories. Every one of us had been introduced to the sea by our parents, be they surfers, farmers, teachers or sailors. The conversation moved onto how it had shaped our lives, and shed light on what may lie in our futures. A lot went on in 2016 for the Finisterre Ambassadors. Fergal Smith stood as a candidate in last year’s Irish General Election and worked up on the Moy Hill Community Farm, showing us how to reconnect to the land. Noah Lane continued to push the boundaries of cold water surfing, winning the Wave of the Winter. Our team manager Matt Smith co-founded Backwash, a print anthology about surf and culture, as well as Hometree, an Irish re-forestation initiative. Easkey Britton finished her doctorate and founded Waves of Freedom. Sam Bleakley also finished his PhD, flying to all corners of the globe using surfing to affect change and deliver a positive social impact. Newcomer Sandy Kerr got engaged to his childhood sweetheart Rachel, bought a house and is spreading the word of surf and healthy living to younger generations in the North East. We left with a further shared sense of purpose and common ground, excited to see where our paths take us in 2017 and beyond.

Every day they’re able to post something online. Looking at them I always thought I couldn’t make it: too busy with my daily job in the studio, too busy at home with my family. But I tried. And I managed to do it. I just had to work against the clock. GastaLoops is a 100 day design project with some “auto inflicted rules”, strong limitations that are able to fuel the creativity. The gifs had to be: 50 frames long with 3 flat colours (ivory, coral, black) looping Some of the GastaLoops I have done are better than others. Some are technically really simple. Some are boring. But I am really happy that I manage to keep up for 100 days, with no missing days. I am now actively trying to do an exhibition with my loops. We created a new and animated interpretation of ‘The Garden Of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch ( http://bit.ly/2l8h5tM ). We were chosen to go crazy on the middle panel. So we did… in 4K!!! In their latest work, the group cleared the original landscape of the middle panel of Bosch’s painting and reconstructed it into a hallucinatory 4K animation. The creatures that populate this indoor playground embody the excesses and desires of 21st century Western civilization. Consumerism, selfishness, escapism, the lure of eroticism, vanity and decadence. All characters are metaphors for our society where loners swarm their digital dream world. They are symbolic reflections of egos and an imagination of people as they see themselves - unlike Bosch’s version, where all individuals more or less look the same. From a horny Hello Kitty to a coke hunting penis snake. From an incarnate spybot to headless fried chickens. These characters, once precisely painted dream figures, are now digitally created 3D models. All of them have been given their own animation loop to wander through the landscape. By placing them altogether in this synthetic fresco, the picture is never the same. As nine of us touched down in the desert oasis known as Tel Aviv, Israël, little was known of what laid beyond the great gates of Israeli customs. Over 10 days our humus powered crew, led by local skate guide Ofer Or would bomb coastal hills from northern points of Haïfa to Tel Aviv where spots flowed as if they were from a bottle of endless Munischewitz on Shabbat. Lest we forget about the marble plazas of Ashdod… magical. A few found their deepest, most spiritual selves in the ally’s of Jerusalem’s old city. Sprawling across the tomb of Jesus, only to be lost again the following day in the blazing banks of the Dead Sea and through the desert to Eilat. In his documentaries, German filmmaker Werner Herzog has made poetic pessimism his trademark. His voice overs seem to bask in the bleakness of their own words, sometimes making it hard to gauge whether he is serious or jesting. Peet Gelderblom’s mash-up plays on this aspect by combining audio from Herzog’s antarctic documentary Encounters at the End of the World with footage from a very different kind of icy movie: the animated musical Happy Feet. The result is a surrealist clash of heavy-handed narration and lighthearted visuals. It’s a clash that, for one thing, reveals the appetite for Hollywoodian hyperboles in Herzog’s dramatic narration. Utilizing post-traumatic growth and disguising past transgressions within a meditative mandala, Shannon May Mackenzie constructed a six foot circle comprised of sparse sentences among tens of thousands of individual lines. With its imposing mountains, endless plateaus and echoing valleys, Norway is a country where nature takes the lead. Using time-lapse, this film attempts to capture the ebb and flow of the seasons and is a result of one year of planning, a second year of shooting and four months of editing. 20,000 kilometers have been travelled, 200,000 photos taken and 20 terabytes worth of hard drives filled. Months have been spent hiking through the mountains, sleeping in tents and travelling through the entire country hunting for the best locations. SEASONS of NORWAY is shot and edited by Morten Rustad.
