@RobertClarkphoto Beetles are by far the largest order of insects, with 350,000–400,000 species, making up about 40% of all insect species described, and about 30% of all animals. The classification at a bit resolved, with about about 500 families. Scientist estimates between 850,000–4,000,000 species proposed which means that 70–95% of all beetle species remain undescribed. For example, the known beetle diversity of Australia is estimated at 23,000 species in 3265 genera and 121 families. While other predictions show there could be as many as 28,000 species in North America, including those currently undescribed, meaning the little studied Australian beetle fauna's true diversity could vary from 80,000 to 100,000. Although we often think of beetles as garden pests or garden protectors, many cultures use parts of dazzling, colorful beetles as prized jewelry. Just as structural color is responsible for the beautiful blue of Morpho butterflies, it is also responsible for the glistening iridescent colors of many tropical beetles. The outermost surface, of iridescent beetles is made of many stacks of slanting, plate-like layers, which are oriented in different directions. The layers bend, and then reflect the incoming light in the same way as the ridges of iridescent butterfly and moth scales. They produce structural colors by interference in the same way as butterfly w1ngs do. A layer of pigment below the refractive plates of beetles and the ridges of iridescent butterfly scales enhances the effect of the iridescence. In some species, thecolorful reflection diffraction grating to cause iridescence. The exact mechanism of the structural color for many species is an open topic of research. #evolution #darwin #thephotosociety by natgeo

A new film in our maker series. Ben Harris is a traditional wooden boat builder based in Cornwall, UK. This film documents Ben Harris’ love of wood work and boat building, how he acquired his skills, and how incredible it is to be able to take something that you’ve built with your own hands out onto the water and sail it across the sea. Who is Ben Harris? Ben has always loved wood. His mother said that his first word was ‘log’. He has been working with wood throughout the UK since the age of 15. First as an assistant to a cabinet maker, where he started by sharpening the tools and clearing up. He then developed his skills in furniture making and his passion for wood and forestry by working in broadleaf woodlands. Later he tuned his skills in bespoke oak-framed carpentry and went on to establish a sawmill and oak framing business in Scotland, sourcing timber from the local estates. In 2005 Ben moved to Cornwall to study boatbuilding. He has been building boats and sailing them ever since. Shooting from timber to tide We spent three days with Ben, staying with him in the idyllic handbuilt wooden cabin he lives in, in Constantine, Cornwall. When we arrived Wednesday, late afternoon, the plan was to make pumpkin soup and couldn’t believe our luck when we discovered the open fire cooking area in the garden. Within an hour after arriving we were already shooting some lovely material. The next day we covered the area around the house, the two workshops, the woods and recorded the voice-over. The real treat came on Friday morning when we took his self-built sailing yacht Alva out on Falmouth’s waters. First we covered the beautiful yacht from a motor boat with skipper Matthew Dale and dog Ruben, before we stepped on board ourselves and got close to the action. What a great experience. What happens when four like-minded adventurers head into one of the world’s wildest mountain ranges with nothing but their mountain bikes and enough food to survive for 10 days? The answer? What doesn’t happen? Terrifying lightning storms. Raging-river crossings. Snow-covered glacial pass traverses. Mind-melting descents. Constant fights with vicious dogs. Tense encounters with over-zealous border-patrol guards. All of the above were just another day following “The Trail to Kazbegi,” a self-supported mountain-bike mission through the highest reaches of the Caucasus Mountains in the former Soviet Republic of Georgia. Our four-man team—adventure filmmaker Joey Schusler, Bike magazine editor Brice Minnigh, photographer Ross Measures and mountain man Sam Seward—spent half of June 2015 exploring the crown jewels of the Georgian High Caucasus on a feature assignment for Bike. Along the way our crew overcame countless obstacles and experienced some of the most spectacular scenery and trails they had ever encountered. They also were treated to the unparalleled hospitality of the Georgian people and the benign indifference of the elements on their quest to reach the magnificent Mount Kazbek. In the process, they cemented lasting friendships and proved, yet again, that life is simply better in the mountains. Film: Robert Seidel _ www.robertseidel.com Music: Nikolai von Sallwitz _ www.vonsallwitz.com Please choose 1080P for playback to see the film in full quality! The nine virtual sculptures underlying vitreous resulted from experimental setups by Robert Seidel for generating three-dimensional clusters of fibrous refractions, as well as the gravitational lensing of different volumetric and chromatic densities. Singular elements gravitate towards each other, accumulating in a gigantic sculptural system, where each entity exists with its own visual axis and vanishing point. The impalpable luminous formations create prismatic interactions between the ridges and plateaux of the main colours floating in front of the infinite violet background. The multilayered, continuously expanding and decaying system is driven by semi-chaotic processes with localized impulses and their speculative chain reactions. In the spectrum of these possible movements, each singular sculpture becomes an integral component of the whole pictorial force-field. In its asymmetrical orchestration and multitude of spatial-temporal interactions, the abstract-organic images are close in appearance to the concepts of “moving paintings” and “living sculptures” Seidel develops for more than a decade now. Originally vitreous was conceived as a media façade artwork of 80 × 24 × 14 Meters (Target City Lights, Minneapolis, USA, 2012). It later developed in a large-scale projection of 4 × 14 Meters (German Filmmuseum, Frankfurt, Germany, 2015). The short film released in December 2015 features a music score exclusively composed by Nikolai von Sallwitz.

Watch Down To Start A Riot, A Vic Mensa Documentary For our first video cover story, The FADER visits the SAVEMONEY rapper at home in Chicago: http://bit.ly/1QP0qDY Last May, The FADER spent a week with the rapper Vic Mensa in Chicago shooting our first video cover story, Down To Start A Riot. Mensa had recently joined Kanye West on stage at the BRIT Awards and was, along with the rest of his SAVEMONEY crew, teetering on the edge of breaking out in a major way. As Mensa’s go-to producer and friend-since-grammar-school Stefan Ponce recalls, “He really did what he always knew he was going to do. Like, damn, this guy is really about to change his life.” Citing the versatility of SAVEMONEY’s sound and the breadth of their projects, the documentary’s director Aaron Brown says that, “It was cool to see what [Mensa and the SAVEMONEY guys] were doing, because they were doing something that has a lot more dimension.” Brown spent time with Vic in the studio, where there was work to be done and fun to be had; followed him through the streets of Hyde Park, where he recalls seeing the body of a slain classmate as a teenager and where he is now stopped by admirers on the street; and he filmed him freestyling on a subway platform. “I had the idea of trying to explore the genre of documentary, just trying to pick the pieces apart of a rapper,” Brown says of the dramatic subway station session. “I was thinking of an acapella verse as a voiceover in a documentary, that’s what it was. Just trying to freshen it up. We’ve all seen a bunch of rap videos and a bunch of documentaries, so it was asking, how can we think about them as one thing.” With nearly one hundred issues behind us, we are proud to present our first video cover story Down To Start A Riot featuring Vic Mensa and SAVEMONEY. directed by Pussykrew concept by Sevdaliza and Pussykrew produced by Pussykrew MUA Celine Bernaerts music produced by Mucky co-produced by Sevdaliza keys by Joel Dieleman For her latest interdisciplinary project “That Other Girl”, Sevdaliza teamed up with Pussykrew discovering their mutual passion and corresponding references for 3D technology. In this video, Sevdaliza has fallen victim to her own creation of a safe vacuum. Submissive to deep-rooted emotions and assumptions, Sevdaliza finds herself imprisoned in her own paintings and sculptures. Can she remain unflawed? She has become nothing more than a statue surrounded by surreal environments. Identity becomes a game, however she remains in control of the computed bodies. She breaks the stereotypes of gender roles and constructs to manifest a different notion of cyborgian identity. Sevdaliza’s husky vocals float over a mechanical bed that excites masculine energy and sexual adrenaline. As the song continues, a rhythmic tension builds slowly into a chaotic climax. Every retribution becomes more intense and personal, yet she isn’t able to break from that obscure statue of a woman. soundcloud: http://bit.ly/1LOBID2 spotify: http://spoti.fi/1KXVqXo website: http://bit.ly/1JsCS1h facebook: http://on.fb.me/1NJjrHP supported by Foxrender Farm http://bit.ly/1J9gHxq supported by Fuel 3D http://bit.ly/1IS5sOT supported by Zahra Reijs http://bit.ly/1IS5uGs supported by Mucky http://www.mucky.nl About Pussykrew http://bit.ly/1J9gGtb http://on.fb.me/1IS5sOU http://bit.ly/1J9gHxr

“Nathan Millward gives a captivating insight into his motives for riding 35,000 miles from Sydney to Alaska on a 105cc Aussie post bike. If you’ve ever wondered what possesses some people to spend a life travelling the globe on two wheels, you’ll need to look hard to find a better – and more honest – explanation than this.” -VisorDown.com Directed by Fraser Byrne @fraserbyrne.com Hit up Nathan on Instagram and tell him we sent you! @nathanthepostman - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - http://bit.ly/1lEhTE2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - About: In 2009, Brit Nathan Millward was enjoying life working in a cafe in Sydney, but the good times were cut short after his Visa extension was denied and he was given 3 days to pack up his life in Australia and exit the country. Rather than booking a flight back to the UK, he made the bold decision to hit the road and ride home. He packed his world belongings into a box, strapped it to the back of his trusty 105cc Honda postman’s bike (max speed 40mph) and embarked on the ride of his life. He set off with no Visas in place, no mechanical knowledge and wasn’t even sure if his cash would stretch the 23,000 mile ride home … Little did Nathan know as he rode away from the Sydney Opera House that morning, he was at the start of a grand journey that would take him further than he ever could have imagined. A journey not just of epic proportions, but one that would take him right to the extremities of personal discovery and ultimately, would take him in search of the end of the road. A cross between Miyazaki and Pixar, SOAR is an award-winning 3D animated movie about a young girl who must help a tiny boy pilot fly home before it’s too late. http://on.fb.me/1O0s7uB Soar was created as Alyce Tzue’s thesis project in school. What began as a toil of love by first-time filmmakers ended up catching the eyes of festivals all over the world. Soar is the proud 2015 Gold Winner of the 42nd Student Oscars, Best Student Animation Winner at Palm Springs, Finalist at the Student BAFTAs, and has screened in the Hamptons, St. Louis, Seoul, Austin, and more. The Soar team is beyond grateful for your support. We believe the film’s surprise success is proof of its message: when you put in everything you’ve got, sometimes you achieve more than you ever expected. There are plans to make Soar into a feature length film inspired by the sensibilities of Hayao Miyazaki and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. A Taller Us, Foxtrott’s debut album is a musical interpretation of life’s monolithic challenges. Together we elaborated on that metaphor for the “Shaky Hands” video. Alongside VFX artist Martha Aguilar we created a vertical climb through various stages of inner turmoil that climaxes into a classic tale of “survival of the fittest”. Set in a quarry 4 hours south of Montreal, Canada, the video further develops the visual language initially explored in the video for previous single Driven. Deep in the wilds of rural Alabama, a spear-hunter proclaims himself the world’s greatest and erects a museum dedicated to his own obsession. In this atmospheric and darkly funny documentary, an offbeat cast of lovers, acolytes, and critics of the megalomaniacal spear-hunter remember his distinctive tactics both for killing and for leaving a legacy. Stormscapes 3 is for those that enjoy the visual aspect of our beautifully unique Blue Marble’s fascinating weather, or those wishing to experience elemental nature in some of its most surreal and chaotic forms. Particularly focusing on severe weather located in the northern high plains region (and adjacent ranges) of the USA. This video showcases a variety of supercells and other rotating storms, spooky night based mesoscale convective systems, atmospheric optics such as rainbows and crepuscular rays, various forms of lightning, and even a rare Shirley Basin, Wyoming tornado. I highly recommend a good set of speakers or headphones. There is a lot of deeper bass in the track, which adds to the overall feel I was going for. You’ll miss out without it. Especially during the transition from day to night. If you suffer from any negative photosensitive reactions to strobing or flashing lights, it might be advisable to skip the night focused lightning sequences of Stormscapes 3. They are…intense…welcome to mother nature’s dance party (it’s even crazier in person). The last two minutes are almost nothing but lightning sequences. Stop watching immediately if it becomes too much for you. If you are interested in the progression of the Stormscapes series, please have a look at the first two. If you’d like to see more of the June 1, 2015 Rapid City supercell (only added 1 quick sequence here), I have a video dedicated to its awesomeness. Probably one of the most beautiful natural phenomena I’ve ever witnessed. http://bit.ly/1lGBOSj - Stormscapes 1 http://bit.ly/1XMGdob - Stormscapes 2 http://bit.ly/1lGBR0m - Rapid City Supercell Track title - Everything Band - Everyone Moves Away http://bit.ly/1XMGdoc http://on.fb.me/1lGBR0n Intro material courtesy of the NOAA-NASA GOES Project. http://go.nasa.gov/1XMGbfT All video material (or any video stills of said material), omitting the GOES imagery, copyright Nicolaus Wegner 2015. Unaltered embeds (via Vimeo’s player and links) are ok unless you are trying to sell something; be it for personal profit, religious, or political reasons. Other than that, please feel free to share as you wish. Hope it inspires some to get out and witness such amazing events in person.
